The University of Wisconsin-Superior's Yellowjacket Union continues to earn state awards and industry recognition for design.
Wisconsin's Division of State Facilities presented its 2011 Excellence in Architectural Design Award to the Yellowjacket Union in a ceremony held April 20 in Madison. The award recognizes new state buildings for excellence in function, use of space, energy efficiency and other design criteria.
Last year the DSF recognized the Yellowjacket Union with its Excellence in Sustainable Design and Construction Award. This is the first time in recent history that a state building has received consecutive DSF excellence awards.
The awards are a result of the teamwork that ensured the Yellowjacket Union was a good fit for the university, said Janet Hanson, vice chancellor for administration and finance at UW-Superior.
"The awards we've received for the Yellowjacket Union reflect the hard work and dedication not only of the architects, but of the many people on our campus who played key roles in planning and developing the building," she said.
In addition to the DSF award, the Yellowjacket Union earlier this year was featured in "The Bulletin of the Association of College Unions International." The bimonthly publication covers issues related to the college union and student activities profession.
Next month, the Yellowjacket Union will receive a Top Project Award from The Daily Reporter, a statewide construction newspaper published in Milwaukee. The award recognizes outstanding achievements by Wisconsin builders, owners, engineers, architects and more.
The $22 million, 90,000-square-foot Yellowjacket Union opened in January 2010 as the center of student life on the UW-Superior campus. Financed by student fees and donor gifts, it is designed to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification, highlighting the university's commitment to environmental sustainability and energy-efficient operations. It was designed by Jan van den Kieboom and Workshop Architects of Milwaukee.
