We will assist you in obtaining a U.S. Social Security number. You should wait until you have been in the United States for a minimum of two weeks before you apply for your card. At that time, you will need to present:
A letter from an on-campus employer on their department's letterhead stationery indicating that you have been hired. Either Mark or Cherie will need to endorse this letter, as well. See instructions below.
Your immigration documents (passport, I-20, and I-94)
Canadian students who do not carry a passport may show a certified birth certificate and a second photo ID such as a provincial driver's license.
UWS student ID card
The card bearing this number must be presented to any employer for whom you work. When you receive the card, please bring it to the Registrar's Office in Main 136 to be entered into your permanent file and also bring it to the OIP so that a photocopy can be included in your file there.
How to get a letter from an on-campus employer as required in applying for a Social Security Card
You can begin looking for an on campus job as soon as you come to the campus. After you are offered a job, let the employer know that you will need a letter of employment to apply for your Social Security Card. Instructions and a sample are provided on the OIP webpage http://www.uwsuper.edu/oip/intl_curr/forms.cfm
You can begin working with the department and start the process of applying for the Social Security card simultaneously. It is true that you will need a Social Security Number to work on campus, but we will help you to obtain the card.
