Greetings from the Office of International Programs! Each semester we welcome new international students from around the world. Once they settle into their daily routines of classes and campus activities, many are interested in learning more about everyday American life outside of campus. We have found that the best way for them to do this is to spend time with American families. If you'd like to share some American hospitality and culture with an international student, and enrich your understanding of another culture at the same time, we encourage you to consider becoming a "Friend Family". UWS international students are waiting to meet you!
What constitutes a "family"? Couples with and without children, single people, older people...anyone with a genuine interest in sharing their way of life, and spending time with a student from another country. Don't worry - being a "Friend Family" does not involve a large time commitment. It means making contact with your student once or twice a month and sharing a meal, concert, sporting event, or just a stroll around one of our many beautiful natural areas. It can also be just 'hanging out' at home, or inviting your student along on an activity you would normally do, such as grocery shopping, or attending a child's soccer game.
We hope you will consider this opportunity to make UWS international students feel welcome and at home here in our community. Please note that the Friend Family Program is not limited to UWS faculty and staff only. We invite members of the local community to participate! Just contact Kim Habig in the Office of International Programs for more information, or call 715-394-8138.
