Kym Young, Visual Arts graduate student and past Co-President of the Black Student Union, poses for a picture at the "Solidarity Against Hate" campus event that she coordinated.

Kym Young, a graduate student in the Visual Arts Department and past co-president of UW-Superior's Black Student Union, will receive the 2010-11 UW-System's Woman of Color in Education Award.

Kym received her Liberal Arts degree at Lake Superior College in 2001. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology at UW-Superior in 2003 with Magna Cum Laude honors and will graduate in December with a Master of Arts degree from UW-Superior.

Since her undergraduate years Kym has been very involved in countless programs and events, both on-campus and in surrounding communities, that promote leadership, diversity, cultural awareness, inclusion, and women's advocacy and women's rights. She has been instrumental in bringing an almost non-existent student organization back into a flourishing and thriving organization called the Black Student Union which promotes higher learning, inclusion, youth mentorship, African and African American cultural awareness, and volunteerism. She has worked as volunteer advocate for 5 years for a local Women's Coalition non-profit organization in Duluth. In her undergraduate years, she was a McNair Scholar in the UW-Superior's McNair Scholars Program where she conducted research on the "Matriarchal heritages in women's pottery: an examination of similiarities in West African and Native American women's pottery traditions." She has presented her research, and artwork, at leadership conferences, such as the UW-System's American Multicultural Student Leadership Conference since her Junior year at UW-Superior. This semester, Kym was a featured artist in a local art exhibit that included works by domestic abuse survivors. Currently, Kym is employed as a Program Coordinator with the Five Points mentoring program which is part of the Mentor Duluth organization where she mentors and advocates for our youth, and their families, in the Twin Ports.

An on-campus honoring event will be hosted on March 1, 2011 at 11:45 A.M. in the Multicultural Center, Old Main 232. This event is free and will be open to the public. It is co-sponsored by the campus's Women Studies Department and Office of Multicultural Affairs.

There will be a formal honoring celebration for all the UW-System campus's honorees on March 26, 2011 at the 35th Annual UW-System's Women's Studies Conference at UW-Madison's campus.

For further information on these events and/or the award recognition of Kym Young please contact Dianna Hunter at 715-394-8405 or dhunter@uwsuper.edu.
