Alora Rueth and Ahnaf Ahmed Shadman (4/08/13)

The Office of Multicultural Affairs wants you to meet:

Returning Student:

AloraAlora Rueth

Hometown:  Loyal, WI

Year:  Senior (part-time Distance Learning)

Major/Minor:  Communicating Arts/Business - Psychology

What drew you to UW-Superior?:  UWS looked like the best choice to finish my degree as a nontraditional student.  I had spent years taking classes from different universities in the UW system and found this program to be the best fit for me.  Also, the encouragement from Christine Kline at the start that I could really do this helped a lot.

What student organizations/extracurricular activities are you a part of and/or planning to be a part of?:  I am not a part of any organizations/activities at UWS, and due to the distance I will not be able to participate.  Time constraints also prevent me from doing so.  However, off campus I have written a book published by Our Little Books called Holy Heifer Tales! And I'm in the process of developing a business which has already been launched to a very part-time degree.  I also blog at www.holyheifertales.com which started the whole book thing.  I did a research project at UWS about social media for credit which I found to be very interesting.

What are you looking forward to most during this upcoming year?:  I look forward to winding up my academic journey at UWS.  My last semester is this spring, and I look forward to graduation in 2013.  Graduating has been a lifelong dream, and I am going to try to graduate at campus in person with the other graduates.  I also look forward to having time afterward to put to use further what I have gained from my studies here at UWS, either in my own business and/or an employer in an online capacity hopefully or somewhere close by.

In one sentence, what is your advice to your peers about succeeding in college?:  Patience and persistence are necessary to achieving anything worthwhile, especially the persistence.

One "Fun Fact" about you:  I suppose my interests in writing and my business are what I consider hobbies because I can totally get lost in them if nothing else would interrupt me like my dogs and the crazy stuff that goes on at the dairy farm.  In fact, all of the craziness and chaos on the farm is included in my blog and book.  The book has just been published, and the reviews are pretty positive.  One reviewer said the stories in my book are almost like Garrison Keillor which really surprised me.

Hometown: Sylhet, Bangladesh

Year: Sophomore

Major/Minor: Business Administration and Management Mathematics

What drew you to UW-Superior?: I am from Bangladesh, Asia. There aren't many students here from my country on this campus. My country is in the tropics and we never see cold weather like that of Superior, EVER. One of the reasons that I chose this University was because of the cold weather and the snow. The weather brought me to this campus but it's the people here that makes me want to stay. On this campus I have met wonderful people from all over the world. They have introduced me to cultures previously unknown to me.

What student organizations/extracurricular activities are you a part of and/or planning to be a part of?: I am not that involved with many organizations but I am a member of WSA. As far as extracurricular activities goes I am an active member of the YU. LOL! What I mean to say is, whenever I have free time I spend my time socializing with people in the YU.

What are you looking forward to most during this upcoming year?: Meeting new people and improving my quirks.

In one sentence, what is your advice to your peers about succeeding in college?: Academically, my first semester here was a disaster. There were things that I didn't experience with before hence why my academic results took a big hit. But even than I don't regret a single second of my first semester. I found a lot of other things that were worth experiencing. Right now I am working really hard to bring up my grades back up. That first semester also taught me how to balance my personal life with my school life.

One "Fun Fact" about you: There are not that many fun things about me actually. I am just your regular, boring college student who loves a good laugh and enjoys good music. You could say that I am a decent pool player although I don't think so.

We will spotlight both new and/or returning UW-Superior students each week throughout the academic year. We will spotlight these students on our office website, Facebook page, and student/staff digests.
