UW-Superior offers its students the opportunity to earn credit for learning outside the classroom setting.
Generally, such "life experiences" are gained from learning through professional duties, on-the-job training, vocational-technical training, workshops/seminars attended, and independent study. A documented portfolio is prepared by the student and evaluated by the faculty. Credit earned through portfolio development may be used to partially fulfill graduation requirements for the baccalaureate degree.
It is important to note that credit is not awarded for experiences, but rather, for the learning that has taken place because of these experiences. Legitimate learning experiences meet the following criteria: University-level learning (scope and depth), learning that can be documented, with adequate documentation to allow for evaluation.
To begin the process toward requesting credit for experiential learning, enroll in the required course IDS 298 Portfolio Development. This one credit, online course is available to both on-campus and distance learning students and is offered pass/ fail.
This course provides step-by-step guidance through the process of developing a portfolio. At the conclusion of the course, each student will have prepared one or more portfolios to request credit for learning through experience.
