The UW-Superior Basketball club earned its first victory at the NIRSA Regional Tournament in St. Cloud, MN the weekend of February 19th & 20th. The basketball club was faced with three tough first day round robin games, a power outage, and a winter storm in their quest to win the tournament and represent UW-Superior at the National tournament in Austin, TX.

The clubs opening contest was a game of nerves and intensity as they faced off against the University of North Dakota. In an up and down game, UW-Superior earned its first win 48-46 when Seth McKenzie hit a buzzer beater to win the game as time expired.

In the second game of the day, the club trailed by 20 points at halftime to a well disciplined team from DePaul University. The team fought hard and slowly climbed their way back into the game. With two minutes to go, UW-Superior closed the deficit to three points. But DePaul proved to be too much and held on for the victory 62-52.

In the final round robin game of the day, UW-Superior faced off against one of two teams from Mankato State University. Again, the club trailed at halftime, but played well in the second half closing the gap and sending the game into overtime. During the first overtime, UW-Superior trailed by four points with 40 seconds to go. In an amazing show of composure and teamwork, UW-Superior tied the game to sent it into double overtime. During the second overtime, MSU-Three Rivers proved to be too much as they won the game 84-79.

Simon Rousset (Co-President/Team Captain) said, "I was very happy with how we played. Too be able to come out here and compete with schools that hold regular club practices and are three times or more the size of UW-Superior is quite the accomplishment,". After a tough fought first day, UW-Superior would take the sixth seed into the single elimination tournament on Sunday.

Sunday was a day full of unexpected twists and turns. UW-Superior was matched up against UW-Lacrosse for their opening round match. During the first half, with only a few points separating the two teams, the power went out. A severe winter storm was bearing down on St. Cloud and knocked the power out for about three hours. This sent tournament staff scrambling to find a new venue and forced the team to make a tough decision. Do we play? Or do we head home avoiding the most severe part of the storm? The team felt that although the tournament was a great success for their first time, it is better to err on the side of caution and head home.

"It was a tough decision to make, but we made the right one," said Rousset. "I wanted to make sure we were all safe, even if that meant we had to forfeit the game,". UW-Lacrosse went on to win the tournament.

Players that represented UW-Superior at the Tournament were; Micah Kantonen, Monte Stewart, Kyle Theis, Seth McKenzie, Peter Vukelich, DJ Bressler, and Simon Rousset.

The basketball club meets twice a week during the semester to practice and scrimmage. All students are welcome to attend. If you are interested in participating with the basketball club, please contact Simon Rousset (srousset@uwsuper.edu) or Joe Mukite (jmukite@uwsuper.edu).
