The new treadmill in UW-Superior's Marcovich Wellness Center stands out for a couple of reasons.
Amid a sea of white and grey fitness machines, it's the only one that's pink. It's also the only machine that raises money to fight breast cancer.
UW-Superior's Campus Recreation program bought the pink CYBEX treadmill as part of the manufacturer's annual promotion for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During October, CYBEX will donate 10 cents to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for every mile logged on the machine.
"This is a wonderful learning experience for students and it supports a great cause," said Krisi Patterson, assistant director of campus recreation. "We're working with Yellowjacket athletics, the community, our general student population, student organizations and any other group that wants to help support this. My goal is to have the pink treadmill be the choice piece of equipment to use during the month of October."
Cancer survivor and university employee Carmen Britton inaugurated the treadmill on Sept. 30 by walking the first mile.
Marcovich Wellness Center staff will promote use of the treadmill by Yellowjacket athletic teams and other groups throughout the month to raise money. Campus Recreation, Student Health and Counseling and the student organization Colleges Against Cancer are working together on the fund-raising effort.
Through our programs and facilities, we provide an array of recreation and wellness opportunities that foster active and healthy lifestyles.
