Information and applications for federal veterans benefits may be obtained online at www.gibill.va.gov or through the Registrar's Office, Old Main, Room 139, (715) 394-8250. Veterans leaving active duty, if not applying online, must provide UW-Superior a certified copy of their discharge papers (DD214). The county clerk's office in the county in which the student resides can make a certified copy from the original if one is needed.
Reservists and National Guard veterans must provide the school with an original of DD-2384 Notice Of Basic Eligibility (NOBE), and, if eligible for "kicker" monies, a copy of the kicker agreement. The commanding officer of a student's unit initiates these forms.
Students attending school under the GI Bill receive monthly payments from the Veterans Administration according to the number of semester hours carried.
The state of Wisconsin offers the Wisconsin GI Bill. A brochure that explains the benefits and includes the forms necessary to apply is available online. This information is also available from your County Veterans Service Office (CVSO). The Wisconsin GI Bill provides tuition waivers for certain eligible veterans, spouses, or dependents to attend University of Wisconsin System institutions or Wisconsin's Technical Colleges. The bill became effective for the 2005-06 academic year. Details on eligibility and application procedures are listed in the Wisconsin GI Bill link.
This will assist veteran students who must leave classes prior to the end of a term, or arrive late for their first day of classes, or are called in duty during the middle of a term, due to military assignment. View the Military Policy.
Students who are the child of service members who have died in the line of duty after September 10, 2001, are eligible for the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship. You may be married or over 23 and still be eligible. For more information, and how to apply, go to the Fry Scholarship information, and the application at the VA Form 22-5490 site.
The American Council for Education (ACE) evaluates military training and education, and translates courses and occupations held by service members into college credit recommendations. Descriptions of the courses and occupations evaluated by ACE, along with recommended numbers of credits, are published in the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services (also known as the Guide), distributed every two years to military education offices, colleges, and universities. The actual type and amount of credit awarded depends on the policies of the college or university and your academic goals.
The Guide is also available online at www.militaryguides.acenet.edu .
To determine if you are eligible for college credit, advanced placement, or other recognition for your military training:
Both AARTS and SMART transcripts are available free of charge to eligible Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines. Please check with the AARTS and SMART Operations Centers to confirm your eligibility.
Veterans Administration educational benefits may affect financial aid. Veterans must report income from VA educational benefits when applying for financial aid. Also, veterans must remember VA educational benefits should not be counted on as the only source to cover school costs.
The Department of Veterans Affairs administers benefit programs. If you need additional assistance, please contact DVA via their toll-free number 1-888-GI-BILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) to speak with a Veterans Benefits Counselor.
