University Archives

The University Archives serves the historical needs of the University of Wisconsin, Superior, permanently storing historically significant campus records and providing reference services for those records to the university and greater community. The University Archives has records of the President/Chancellors; Catalogs, bulletins, and class schedules from 1896 onwards; complete runs of the student newspapers Peptomist 1920-1974, and Promethian 1974-2007; complete set of the Gitche Gummi yearbooks 1908-1972; records of student and faculty government; and numerous other series. At this time few University Archives collections are cataloged in the library's on-line catalog. Contact the archivist directly with questions regarding the University Archives.

Access Newspapers and Yearbooks

Through funding provided by the Student Differential Tuition for the Jim Dan Hill Library, the following University publications have been digitized and placed in an online database. The database is keyword searchable. Just follow the Archives Resource Link.

Student newspapers begin with the Peptomist in 1920 to its end in 1974. It was continued as the Promethean from its beginning in 1975 and ending in May 2006. The last year of the online file is represented by the first issues of the Stinger, 2006-2007

The Yearbook, Gitche Gumee, has been digitized from its inception in 1909 through 1972 when the yearbook ceased publication

Every page of these publications can be searched simply by entering a name or phrase into the search field in the online database. Results of the search will display the page in pdf form, which can be saved, printed, or emailed. As these publications were already previously published and released to the public and past issues housed in the archives are freely open, this database is also similarly available. 

Enter your search term in the field and click"Search." To limit to a publication or to a specific date range,click on the options on the search bar. Once at the results page, you may toggle between results and page view. Click on any citation to view the required page; to return to the list, click on 'Show Previews' on the tool bar. You may also turn the page by clicking the forward/back arrows, or change from a citation list to an issue list.

Access Historic Campus Photographs

You can access a growing number of Superior campus history photographs. Part of the University of Wisconsin collection, each campus sub-site is individually searchable. Go to UW Digital. This site is open and free on the WWW
