Three earn Gilman Scholarships to study abroad

Three University of Wisconsin-Superior students are receiving Gilman Scholarships to help them take part in study abroad opportunities this winter and spring.

The federal Gilman Scholarship Program provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

  • Mara Duke of Golden Valley, Minn., will study marine biology at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji during the spring 2012 semester.

  • Scott McKay of Superior will study in Bali, Indonesia, in January on a faculty-led program with Dr. Marshall Johnson.

  • Angela Castellini of Duluth also will study in Bali, Indonesia, in January on the faculty-led program.

Cherie Sawinski, study abroad program manager at UW-Superior, said the Gilman Scholarships are aimed at students who often do not participate in study abroad programs because of financial need, their academic major or because they are first-generation college students. The scholarships also encourage students to study in countries that don't attract many U.S. students.

Once they return to campus, the Gilman Scholarship recipients will share their experience with other students through essays or presentations.

Other recent UW-Superior recipients include:

  • Logan Campa - currently completing a semester in Fez, Morocco, studying Arabic language immersion.

  • Jessica R.  Carlson - spent summer 2011 in India in biology research.

  • Tim Rogentine - studied Chinese language and international business in China during the spring 2010 semester.

  • Amanda Strehlow - spent the past academic year studying Chinese language and art in China.

  • Lalese Dawano - spent January 2011 in India on a faculty-led program with Dr. Jerry Hembd.

  • Jami Koivisto - spent January 2011 in India on a faculty-led program with Dr. Jerry Hembd.

Information about this federal scholarship is found at http://www.iie.org/gilman   Students with a Federal Pell Grant in their financial aid package are eligible to apply.
