Windows 7 and Office 2010 - Computer Labs, Classrooms, and Offices

Faculty, Staff, and Students:

Welcome to another great academic year at UW-Superior. With a new semester comes some changes on the technology you use in classrooms and in computer labs.

In the past year Microsoft announced that with the release of Windows 7 they will no longer upgrade, patch, or support Windows XP. Technology Services has been busy this summer preparing for this change. Within the last month we have upgraded all campus general access labs and classroom teaching stations to Windows 7. You will notice a few changes in the operating system that will benefit the way you teach and learn. Overall the operating system has not changed much and you should find navigation intuitive and more functional. Over the coming months we plan to deploy Windows 7 to all campus PC computers. We are working on a migration plan and will announce to the campus when we are prepared to transition the hundreds of systems that will need to be upgraded. (If you would like to have Windows 7 installed on your computer, as an early adopter, please send me an e-mail at detailing your name, computer location, and the Yellow Sticker number on your laptop or desktop. I will then add you to the early adopter list and we will notify you in a few weeks when we are ready to begin installs. Any new PC computers being purchased by the campus will be running Windows 7.)

As part of the classroom and lab upgrade we have also installed Office 2010, the latest version of Microsoft Office. This version includes new and enhanced versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. The installation of Office 2010 was driven by new curriculum in many courses that use the new versions of Word and Excel for coursework. Any documents created in office 2010 are compatible with Office 2007 and older versions of Office. Please watch your staff digest for announcements when we begin to ask for Faculty & Staff to install Office 2010 on their systems in the coming months. Students and staff can purchase Office 2010 for personal home use from the WISC website at at a discounted rate.

If you would like to learn more about using Windows 7 or Office 2010 you can log-in to our online training source, Atomic Learning. On Atomic Learning you will find training on all aspects of Windows 7 and Office 2010. You can access this resource at . You will just need your campus log-in and Password to use this service. Atomic can be used on and off campus by all faculty, Staff, and Students. The use of this product is free as Technology Services has paid for an unlimited use license for the campus.
