Weather Policy: Winter is early and here are a few things to keep in mind regarding inclement weather. First and most importantly, BE SAFE! When the weather is cold, plus an added factor of the wind chill, fingers, cheeks, and ears tend to suffer the most. Walkers please use your best judgment in deciding if it is safe to walk over to UW-Superior. If you drive or catch a ride you are always welcome to come for tutoring, however if you are a walker you are encouraged to take the bus home on those frigid days. Please don't forget to call to excuse yourself! Also remember when after school programming is canceled so is UB.
ATTENTION SENIORS! This is a crucial time for you. You will have many things to consider and decision to make this academic year, from college applications to FAFSA, and senior projects to scholarship. Please pay special close attention to notes on the board as to when senior meeting will be held. We plan to have them once a month, to keep you as informed as your graduation date approaches. We don't want you to miss deadlines and want to prepare you for all the obstacles you will face this year and next. This is time set aside especially for you. Please try to schedule your time to attend these special meetings.
Students have taken notice that the UB program of 2012-2013 has set higher expectations of their participants. Students must ask themselves: How can I better manage my time? I feel overwhelmed, what do I do? How do I keep my grades up and still have time for Upward Bound, sports, friends, and a job? Below you will find some simple and practical techniques you can follow:
Take responsibility for yourself: Recognize that in order to succeed you need to make decisions about your priorities, your time, and your resources.
Center yourself around your values and principles: Don't let friends and acquaintances dictate what you consider important.
Put first things first: Follow up on the priorities you have set for yourself, and don't let others, or other interests, distract you from your goals.
Discover your key productivity periods and places: Morning, afternoon, or evening? Find spaces where you can be the most focused and productive. Prioritize your most difficult study challenges. The UB office is open generally from 8:30-4:30 during the week if you need a quiet place!
Consider yourself in a win-win situation: When you contribute your best to a class, you, your fellow students, and even your teacher will benefit. Your grades can then be one additional check on your performance
First understand others, then attempt to be understood: When you have an issue with an instructor (a questionable grade, an assignment deadline, etc.) put yourself in the instructor's place. Now ask yourself how you can best make your argument given his/her situation.
Look for better solutions to problems: For example, if you don't understand the course material, don't just re-read it. Try something else! Consult with the professor, a tutor, a classmate, a study group, or UPWARD BOUND!
Look to continually challenge yourself!
Be the best leader you can be!
Thank you to all the families that attended our Family Potluck Saturday in September! The variety of food was outstanding! It was amazing to see the participation with the parents vs. students softball game. We cannot thank you enough for supporting your student(s) in Upward Bound. Our October Saturday Academy consisted of ACT test prep, QUIC Testing, speakers, and swimming at the MWC. November's Saturday Academy was amazing! We were the honorary host at a UW-Superior Women's Hockey game and were able to give back by helping clean up afterwards. For supper we attended Cultural Night in the YU. I was so proud of the students that tried the amazing and different culturally based foods. I enjoyed every bite! Lastly, we watched fantastic performances put on by the World Student Association. Pay attention to the dates listed below for more amazing Saturday Academies!
Dear Seniors and Parents,
Congratulations!!! You have all been busy filling out and submitting college applications and are waiting for your acceptance letters to arrive in the mail. Very exciting! After Jan 1st, 2013 is the time to start filling out your financial aid application FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) forms for this fall! We will be having our Financial Aid Night for seniors and parents on Tuesday, February 12th, 2013 from 5-7:00pm. A guest speaker from the UWS Financial Aid office will be here to assist you in filling out the online form and submission. You will NEED to bring your PIN number to FAFSAnight to be able to complete the application. Both student and a parent must obtain separate PIN numbers. You can obtain your PIN number by going to the following website TODAY at http://www.pin.ed.gov/PINWebApp/pinindex.jsp. If you do not have internet access at home please feel free to stop by the Upward Bound office to use our computers in the next few weeks so you have your pin by Feb. 12th. You MUST have your social security number to apply for your pin. You must allow up to one week to receive your PIN numbers. Please remember that your taxes do NOT need to be filed but you do need to bring all the documents with you!! Please RSVP by Feb. 1st with the UB office, we need a head count to arrange the proper computer lab. This is a very busy time and we know it can be stressful. Please make an appointment with Angie or Dylan to discuss any concerns you are having about the college application/financial aid process. We are here for YOU!
Hi students and parents! First off, you all are amazing! A few friendly student reminders. Each and every one of you truly brings something special to the program. The program is not the same when you are not here and you are missed . If you are going to be absent from a UB Thursday night or Saturday Academy, make sure you call us at the office or our cell phones. Remember, Facebook, email, and text messages are not acceptable ways to excuse yourself, and you cannot excuse other students, it is their own responsibility. We need to talk to each one of you in case there are important announcements that you may be missing that day. If you are excused from a Saturday Academy and plan on making it up, you need to present your ideas to us and make it up before the next SA event.
Please remember to check the white board every Thursday as there is always information that you need to know regarding a variety of topics. Check the UB Facebook page on occasion as this is the easiest way to communicate to the whole group at once. Please come and see me to make sure I have your email if you do not have a Facebook account. I will email you with the information from that post. Things can come up and change, that is why it is so important to be flexible and check the whiteboard, Facebook posts, email, and listen every time you are at UB. I cannot say enough about how great you all are. Thank you for caring, taking the initiative, and supporting Upward Bound!
