Dennis and Patricia Musil understand the importance
of supporting Campaign Superior: Higher Expectations. Both are
UW-Superior alumni as well as avid Yellowjacket hockey fans. And both
believe the university offers great opportunities to Northland students.
“We both want to see the school remain strong and grow so that it can
continue to provide helpful services to the students,” they said.
Dennis Musil graduated in
1956. He was a member of the hockey club after the organization was
started in his sophomore year. All four years he attended he also was a
member of Air Force ROTC. Upon graduating, the Air Force helped fund a
year in school at Penn State University for meteorology. He built a
career in meteorology through working with the Air Force for four years,
the U.S. Navy for seven years, and the South Dakota School of Mines and
Technology until he retired.
Most of Dennis’
professional career was spent at the South Dakota School of Mines and
Technology. He taught courses on weather modification research and cloud
physics, and did research. Beginning his education at UW-Superior was a
good choice for him because the university gave him many opportunities.
He continues to support the school because it offers important
opportunities to the region’s young people, and because he loves the
hockey team.
Patricia Musil graduated
from UW-Superior in 1957. She chose the school because “it was one of
the best schools around for studying elementary education.” She
participated in the Alpha Kappa Sorority and the Lutheran Students
Association. After college she taught for approximately 25 years in
White Bear Lake, Minn.; Oxnard, Calif.; Rapid City, S.D.; and Ashland
and Bayfield, Wis. Her decision to attend UW-Superior turned out to be a
good one for her because of the guidance she received from professors
and the practical application of what she was learning.
During the Musils’ college
years, McCaskill Hall was an elementary school closely associated with
the university’s elementary education program. Patricia Musil acquired a
lot of experience observing teachers and student teaching at the
McCaskill school. She fondly remembers her professors. “They were good
teachers but I didn’t realize how good until I started teaching,” she
said. “They gave me information, skills, and techniques that helped me
to be more advanced than my fellow first-year teachers. They helped me
teach in ways that were considered new during that time.”
The Musils, now both
retired, live in Delta, Wis. They come to campus to watch hockey games
and to show their support for the university. It is their sincere belief
that Campaign Superior has the potential to equip their alma mater with
the necessary amenities to continue providing a quality education to
local students. Their confidence in UW-Superior is why they continue to
support the school.
