UW-Superior Extension Program
UW-Superior faculty and academic staff hold joint appointments as UW-Extension consultants, researchers, specialists, or programmers in the areas of Education Professional Development, Liberal Studies, Community Leadership, Non-Profit Administration, Health and Human Issues, Small Business Development, Environmental Resources, Community Economic Development, and Media Studio. UW-Superior’s Center for Continuing Education/Extension is organized into three areas: Continuing Education; Small Business Development; and Cooperative Extension.

Continuing Education

Includes opportunities in Education and Credit Outreach, Health and Human Issues, Liberal Studies, Elderhostel and English as a Second Language.

Education and Credit Outreach

Credit Outreach Courses: The Center for Continuing Education/Extension offers approximately 100 credit courses throughout the year to provide educational opportunities primarily to people who are unable to reach the Superior campus during traditional class hours and who are not enrolled full time. Most courses are offered on evenings and weekends either on campus or in other northern Wisconsin locations. Educators Professional Development: In addition to credit courses for teachers, Education Outreach offers conferences and workshops each year for administrators, guidance counselors, school psychologists and curriculum specialists designed to enhance their professional expertise in a timely manner. Credit Outreach courses may be included as part of a student's resident credits and credits toward graduation. Grades earned in the courses are included on a student's transcript at completion of the term in which the class is held.

Liberal Studies

Nonprofit Administration Certificate Program: The Nonprofit Administration Certificate Program is an educational series for individuals employed in nonprofit management and government administration. This series of noncredit workshops is provided to enhance the managerial and leadership skills of people working in not-for-profit organizations. Individuals completing 10 Continuing Education Units (100 hours) in the prescribed curriculum are awarded a Nonprofit Administration Certificate Program. New courses are developed continually to meet the changing needs of today’s nonprofit world.

Approximately three daylong workshops are held each month in Superior, Wisconsin. It is not necessary to be enrolled in the program to attend a seminar. Additional information is available by calling (715) 394-8469. You may also access our Website at: http://nonprofitworkshops.org/

Leadership Superior/Douglas County: The Center for Continuing Education/Extension sponsors a regional 10-month program to enhance the progress of northern Wisconsin through a selective process that identifies and trains present and future leaders. Persons who live and/or work in Superior or Douglas County are invited to apply for the program each June. For more information contact (715) 394-8456.

Health and Human Issues
The Health and Human Issues Program at the UW-Superior Center for Continuing Education/Extension provides many choices for learning in the area of health related issues. Conferences and Workshops are offered individually, and in the context of our certificate programs. Coursework is presented by professionals who work in the specific fields being studied.

The majority of programs in this area are designed for health professionals; although many of the topics are of interest to the lay person as well. The informational needs of the region on health-related subjects is growing, and this field is expected to continue to expand its program offerings. Subject areas include, but are not limited to, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, cancer, and fall prevention. For information on current offerings call (715) 394-8469.

Gerontology Certificate Program (GCP): Participants enrolled in the Gerontology Certificate Program must complete five required core programs (33 hours of instruction) and 28 hours of electives for a total of 61 hours of instruction (6.1 total Continuing Education Units). Participants may complete the Gerontology Certificate Program in two years, but are allowed four years to finish the entire program. The five required core programs are offered over a two-year rotation period. Electives offer a variety of subjects to provide the most up-to-date information on gerontological issues.

Youth and Family Services: The Youth and Family Services (YFS) Certificate Program requires 56 instructional hours in four basic areas of practice: applied child and adolescent development; abnormal psychology; behavior management and intervention; assessment and intervention strategies. Elderhostel
The Center for Continuing Education provides four Elderhostel opportunities for eligible people to learn about our region. Recent programs have included Lake Superior Aquatic Life, Geology of Lake Superior, the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Edmund Fitzgerald, Native American Culture, and Raptor Migration. Superior English as a Second Language Institute
The Superior English as a Second Language Institute offers full-time English language instruction for international students at intermediate and advanced levels. Upon successful completion of English language study, students may make the transition into the university or, with consent of the institute staff, enroll in university courses while completing English language requirements.

The Center for Continuing Education/Extension sponsors an intensive English language program for students from Yamate Women's College in Kobe, Japan. Yamate students study English language and literature and American culture from September to February at UW-Superior. Yamate students live in the residence halls and share Japanese culture with university students and other residents of the area.

The Center for Continuing Education/Extension is developing additional workshops, courses, and programs that will have an international focus. For information call (715) 394-8536.

Small Business Development Center
The Small Business Development Center offers owners and managers of small businesses and entrepreneurs considering going into business confidential, no-cost, individual counseling services and low-cost training programs in a variety of business related areas. Topics include but are not limited to: writing a business plan, buying or selling a business, marketing, accounting, managing personnel, and controlling costs.

The Small Business Development Center offers an eight-session Entrepreneurial Training Program in connection with the Wisconsin Department of Commerce, and counseling services through funds provided by the U.S. Small Business Administration. For information call (715) 394-8351 or 800-410-8351.

Cooperative Extension

UW-Extension provides funding for a number of initiatives linking the expertise of faculty on the UW-Superior campus with the needs of the region's residents. These include the Center for Economic Development, Environmental Resources, and Media Studio.

The Center for Economic Development: Faculty and staff provide services to groups, agencies and organizations engaged in economic development activities in their respective communities, counties, and regions. Services include consulting, economic analysis, applied research, and development planning. For more information, call (715) 394-8544.

Environmental Resources: Faculty and staff work with community and county agents to assist citizens in resolving specialized problems. Emphasis on natural resources to include water quality and fisheries management.

Media Studio: Cooperative Extension staff work in coordination with statewide program leaders and regional county agents to create video resources focused on education around specialized problems.

UW-Superior’s Distance Learning Center
The UW-Superior Distance Learning Center (DLC) is home to the Extended Degree Program and Online Learning. The DLC provides a single point of contact for students, staff and faculty who have questions about distance learning opportunities. Students may complete an undergraduate degree through the Extended Degree Program, enroll in individual online courses, or earn credit through assessment of prior learning, and/or credit by exam (CLEP or Dantes).

Extended Degree Program: The Individualized Major
Through the Extended Degree program, students are able to work with faculty and staff to develop a flexible individualized academic program. UW-Superior’s Extended Degree program is a baccalaureate degree program featuring the individualized major. The major includes at least three areas of study from the university curriculum and allows students to design a unique program that reflects their background, prior academic experience, and/or personal preference. The areas of study relate directly to the student’s personal or career goals. In addition to the individualized major, university General Education and other degree requirements must be met.

Elementary Education: It is possible for students to complete most of the requirements for an elementary education degree or certification through the Extended Degree program. For further information, contact the elementary education advisor in the Distance Learning Center.

The Extended Degree program offers flexible print-based and online instruction. Information about the program may be found on the DLC’s website at http://www2.uwsuper.edu/cee/dlc/

To enter the program, students must first request information, then apply and be admitted to the university. Financial aid is available to qualified students.

UW-Superior Foundation Extended Degree Scholarships
UW-Superior Foundation scholarships are awarded to assist the currently enrolled Extended Degree student who has established goals and made progress toward those goals through the Extended Degree program. Applications with further information about the scholarships are available from the Distance Learning Center.

Online Learning: Individual Online Csourses
Some online courses are available for both on-campus and distance learning students. Other on-campus courses may have materials that are accessed online.

On-Campus Students: Students attending classes on campus have the option of taking some courses totally online. Students must register for these courses through the Registrar’s Office, and will be assessed either an undergraduate or graduate per-credit course fee. A lab fee for each course is also assessed. Online courses are not part of the 12-18 credit plateau for fee purposes.

Assessment of Prior Learning Experiences
Students with learning experiences that may be comparable to the learning outcomes of a university course and which can be documented may request credit for those experiences through the assessment of prior learning process. See Credit for Prior Learning through Portfolio Assessment in the Academic Policies and Procedures section of this catalog.

A student may combine prior learning with the learning offered by the Distance Learning Center to satisfy degree requirements. Credit may be requested for university-level learning acquired through on-the-job training, military service, community volunteer work or other experiences. For many of the courses offered by UW-Superior, the student also has the option of taking examinations for credit.

The portfolio evaluation process and credit by exam are available to all university students.

Interactive Distance Education/Interactive Television Courses (ITV)
The DLC provides programming for all Interactive Television courses offered through UW-Superior. Faculty and Staff interested in using the ITV Network can select from over 300 sites throughout the state to offer courses. The DLC works cooperatively with Computing and Media Services to provide technical support and learning opportunities for faculty who teach using ITV.
