New My E-Hive Portal for Faculty and Staff
All UW-Superior faculty and staff now have access to a personalized portal that provides the essential electronic tools needed for campus work and life. The My E-Hive portal is your Web gateway, available from any browser anywhere, for:
--class rosters, class schedules, advising information, online grading
--single login to Jacket Mail web e-mail and Learn@UW-Superior
--supplies ordering, vehicle requests, work orders
--earning statements
--Kronos student timekeeping, WISDM financial information, technology help
--access to your network file storage off-campus
...plus weather, campus news, upcoming events, and online discussions.
Accessing your portal is easy...just visit www.uwsuper.edu and select "My E-Hive", then log in with your campus E-Hive login ID and password. Choose Personalize Content or Personalize Layout to customize your portal.
Self-Service Login Reset Now Available
A link below the E-Hive login now takes you to a page that permits you to unlock your account and enter a new password. You'll need to provide some personal and account information (sent over a secure connection) for identification purposes.
This login reset function unlocks both E-Hive and campus network access. It changes passwords for the E-Hive, campus network access, and the Learn@UW-Superior online course management system, and other restricted access resources such as library databases and software downloads. It's expected that this self-service feature will improve convenience for many campus technology users.
Changing your password regularly helps keep your information secure. We recommend a password of between 8 and 14 characters with a combination of letters and numbers or special characters.
TechSkills for Students...and Faculty/Staff
The TechSkills program helps ensure that UW-Superior students have the technology skills they need to succeed at our university. TechSkills provides three levels of technology learning: seminars, online software training, and one-on-one assistance from student peer trainers. We encourage instructors to make students aware of this program, and to refer students to it when they need to learn new technology skills to complete a course.
Faculty and staff are also welcome to participate in TechSkills seminars. To view the upcoming seminar schedule, visit the TSS Technology Training page. To arrange online training or make an individual appointment, call 394-8214 or e-mail nnash@uwsuper.edu.
Call the Helpdesk...394-8300 or 800-806-2890
Something not working quite right...or in need of immediate service? Need to buy, research, or find out about new technology? Not sure who to ask your technology question? The Technology Helpdesk is the place to call.
A call to 8300 brings a faster response than direct calls to our staff. From off campus, call 394-8300 or, toll-free, 800-806-2890 . If you prefer e-mail, it's "helpdesk" on campus, "helpdesk@uwsuper.edu" off campus. You can also stop by the Technology Resource Center in McCaskill Hall 122 between 8 AM and 5:30 PM M-Th, 5 PM F for service.
We welcome your suggestions for improvements to our services. Just call 8300 and make a suggestion!
Learn@UW-Superior
More than 30% of all UW-Superior classes used the Learn@UW-Superior course management system during the spring of 2005. Learn@UW-Superior can ease the distribution of syllabi and assignments, facilitate feedback and grade reporting to students, aid student time and coursework management, and extend faculty-to-student and student-to-student communication. It can also help prevent overloaded e-mail boxes! Consider using one or more of its features in your classroom or online courses this fall.
Content provides syllabi, course assignments, and instructional materials in text, image, audio, and video formats
Classlist shows all registered students and enables quick whole-class e-mails
Dropbox collects and stores files turned in by students and can return your feedback
Discussion board organizes and displays messages for access anytime, anywhere and can help students learn from each other
Grades shows each student their own scores and grades as the semester progresses
Quizzes offers a range of answer formats, timed and untimed quizzes, and multiple attempts
Chat Room allows one-on-one "office visits" or group chats set up by teachers or students.
Faculty and staff can contact Lisa Larson at the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology Development and schedule a one-on-one session to start using Learn@ UW-Superior. Watch for the fall schedule of additional sessions on Grades, Quizzes, Discussions, Tools, and Best Practices . Call x8051 or e-mail llarson@uwsuper.edu. The Helpdesk answers student questions on using Learn@UW-Superior.
Classroom Technology
Information on the technology in each UW-Superior classroom is available through the Technology Support Services website. For security reasons, the classroom technology section is available only to on-campus Web browsers. You'll find photos of each room and a listing of the teaching/learning technology in the room. This classroom guide can be handy when you're planning your classes.
Nearly all campus classrooms now have DVD players.
Technology Loan Services
A number of new technology tools will be available for loan this year from the Technology Resource Center. They include:
--a Mimio whiteboard electronic capture system. Write on a whiteboard and save your writing electronically to a computer.
--MiniDV digital video camcorders. A MiniDV conversion system will be available in the Media Lab for making VHS or DVD copies of your digital recordings.
--a Polycom wireless conference speakerphone system, for group meetings by phone
--new higher quality 7 megapixel digital still cameras
We continue to have laptop computers, video/data projectors, small sound systems, and many other technology items available for short term checkout to meet campus community needs.
A new system for authorization of technology loan borrowers will be in place this year. All borrowers will sign a technology loan agreement, and then receive an authorization sticker on their ID. You'll be asked to complete the agreement the next time you borrow technology items.
Your Online Files
Each UW-Superior staff member has 100 megabytes of file storage space on the university network. Your online storage drive appears as the G: drive when you open the "My Computer" icon on Windows PCs. You may also access it through your E-Hive portal, on campus, or with high speed Internet service from off campus. You can save your work there, then retrieve it later at any campus computer.
We encourage use of the G: drive to back up your important files. Any files you place there will have backup copies made nightly as part of the university's data backup system.
During the coming year, we expect to implement a feature for PC users that will automatically relocate your "My Documents" folder to the G: drive. This will ensure that any files you place in that folder are backed up nightly.
Software in Computer Labs
Standard software in labs: Microsoft Office 2003 Suite (Word, Excel, Access, FrontPage, PowerPoint), Acrobat Reader 6, Internet Explorer 6 browser, Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0. All lab computers have Minitab and Maple 8. Some (marked SPSS) have the SPSS statistical package. Lab computers with scanners have Photoshop 6.
Many textbooks now come with software packages that are licensed for student lab use when the text is adopted for a class. If you'd like to have this type of software installed, contact Brian Hood, Academic Technology Coordinator, in Old Main 130, call x8025, or e-mail bhood@uwsuper.edu. Note that some packages require additional license fees.
Software-Office and Home Use
The UW System Microsoft contract permits faculty or staff members using the contract products on their office computer to install one copy of the same product on a home computer, for work related use. Available products include Office 2003, Office 2004 for Macintosh, Windows XP Professional Upgrade, and some earlier versions of these products. Completion of a home use agreement and use of home installation disks is required. You may purchase a home installation disk set for $10 per product at the Technology Resource Center.
We also license Symantec Antivirus for home installation on PCs and Macintosh computers. You may obtain an disk set at the Technology Resource Center. If you have high speed Internet access, you may download Symantec Antivirus. Log in to the download server as you would for Web Access e-mail.
For installation of these products on your University computer, call x8300. There is a $30 departmental charge per installation of the Microsoft Office suites. Symantec Antivirus is available at no charge, and is required on all university computers.
Buying Hardware and Software
Technology Support Services provides assistance with your purchases of technology for campus use. Contact Joe Kmiech, e-mail jkmiech@uwsuper.edu, or call x8280, for help with your purchase.
The university has established standards for a number of products, to provide consistent performance and service. Visit the TSS Purchasing page to see campus standard Dell and Apple computers. We also support Microsoft office suites, Hewlett-Packard printers and scanners, and Panasonic, Sony, and JVC video equipment. The State of Wisconsin and UW System have purchasing contracts for these products and support services, as well as other software and hardware products. Our staff will help you plan your purchase to make best use of funds.
The Technology Resource Center stocks many commonly used technology items. If you need a replacement mouse or keyboard, videotapes, a longer printer or network cable, a USB cable for a new scanner, you can stop by McCaskill Hall 122, pick up the item, and charge it to your department cost center. Call x8300 to find out what we have in stock-if we don't have it, we can probably add it.
Center for Teaching, Learning, & Technology Development
The Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology Development in 124 McCaskill Hall provides support and consultation to university faculty and instructional staff in the design of instruction and encourages, supports, and facilitates excellence in teaching and learning with technology.
Faculty interested in developing a proposal for a project to create, share, and use collections of online materials in teaching and learning should contact the Center for information about the 2006-2007 Curricular Redesign Grant Program, sponsored by UW System¹s Office of Learning and Information Technology and the Learning Technology Development Council. Watch for announcements of the Teaching, Learning and Technology Roundtable schedule, and other workshops on teaching and learning with technology.
Call x8051 or email Lisa Larson, the Center Coordinator, at llarson@uwsuper.edu to discuss your needs
Spam Firewall
The Barracuda SPAM Firewall helps prevent unwanted bulk e-mails from clogging up your inbox. If you have messages in the quarantine inbox, you will receive a Daily Summary report by e-mail which lists the subject and the sender, along with a few actions. From this single summary report, you can choose to deliver, whitelist, or delete messages. Deliver will simply transfer the e-mail to your inbox. Delete will remove the e-mail from your quarantine list. Whitelist will add the sender's e-mail address to a "safe" list, which will ensure future e-mails sent from that e-mail address are not quarantined, but instead are delivered to your inbox.
At the Spam Firewall login page, http://barracuda.uwsuper.edu:8000 , Windows users can download an Outlook plug-in which allows you to classify messages as either spam or not spam. Look for the small link that says Get E-Mail Client Plugins Here, under the login box. The plug-in adds a small green mail icon and small red mail icon in Outlook. Green will submit the message as "not spam," while red will submit it as spam. This training improves the firewall performance.
Convenient Network Printer Access Now Available
Windows computer users now have a convenient Web-based network printing utility available. If you need to print to a network printer and it's not installed on your computer, point your Web browser at http://pike/printers . This website provides a list of the campus networked printers, and a Connect link to permit you to print your documents.
Your use of technology resources is governed by the Guidelines for Appropriate Use of University of Wisconsin-Superior Information Technology Resources. Follow the Technology link on the UW-Superior homepage to read these and other university technology policies . Failure to comply with the guidelines and policies can result in loss of access privileges, University disciplinary action, and/or criminal prosecution.
