Streaming Media Services

Streaming media services are available to the UW-Superior community for university related programs and purposes, through Technology Support Services. We encourage faculty, staff, and students to make use of this emerging tool to communicate and share ideas and experiences. The following procedures and standards are in place to help you make effective use of streaming media.

Supported Protocols

Our Helix media server on apps.uwsuper.edu supports the three most popular media formats - RealMedia, QuickTime, and Windows Media. Players for all of these formats are available for download for both Macintosh and Windows computers. Encoders for Real (www.real.com) and QuickTime (www.apple.com/quicktime) audio and video are available for purchase (Real has a limited free version) and download at their respective websites. Encoders for Windows Media are available for free download at www.microsoft.com/windowsmedia.

Please note, files must have a constant bit-rate otherwise they may not play correctly. (256kbps is recommended)

The computer lab in the Health & Wellness Center has video editing and encoding equipment available. A student consultant is there during limited hours and can help you with your video projects.

QuickTime files must be saved as hinted movies. See the Help section of iMovie or other video editing software for instructions on saving QuickTime hinted movies.

Server Space

To request server space for your streaming audio or video files, visit out streaming media server space request page or call the Helpdesk at x8300. Your server space will be in the Media folder on the Apps server, in a folder with your University username. You'll make your media available by linking to it from a webpage on the University webserver, or from within the Desire2Learn course management system. Instructions for linking your files are below.

When you request server space, we'll ask if you own the rights to your media (it's your own creation) or if you have permission to publish it. Files without these rights or permissions can be placed on the server, but will be restricted to viewing/listening within the UW-Superior community. Your links page will be accessed via password.

Streaming Media Demonstration

Try the performance of our server at your site. Choose low resolution if you are on a dial-up Internet connection, medium resolution if you use DSL or cable Internet service.

Live Streaming

Streaming of live events is also available through the Apps server. For assistance in setting up a live stream, contact the Helpdesk.

Integration with Online Courses

Integration of streaming media within Desire2Learn online courses can be accomplished through Web links. Visit TSS Media page for instructions.

Uploading Your Media to the Server

Your streaming media folder will be created on the Apps server, found on Windows PCs through My Network Places in the Microsoft Windows Network within the UWSUPER domain. Your folder will be within the Media folder. You may drag, or cut-and-paste, your files to this location.

If you are using a Macintosh computer or uploading files from a student computer lab, please contact the Helpdesk or ask for assistance from a lab consultant.

Web Linking to Your Media

Note: When naming your files, please do not include uppercase letters and spaces. Ex: /username/Video 1 test.wma should be /username/video1test.wma.
