International Poetry Reading

A picture from the first international poetry reading held in Swenson Hall in 2011The international poetry reading is a showcase of UW-Superior's mission statement: The University of Wisconsin-Superior fosters intellectual growth and career preparation within a liberal arts tradition that emphasizes individual attention and embodies respect for diverse cultures and multiple voices. The poetry reading was inspired from UW-Eau Claire's event and began last year.  The inaugural reading had 18 poems read in 10 different languages by UW-Superior faculty, staff, and students.  This year we have chosen to coordinate this event with Winterfest to expand the event to the community.  In the future we would love to have community members not only observe the international poetry reading, but participate and expand the event.

Meet Santa

Santa posing with a girlSanta Claus will be at Winterfest!  Feel free to bring your camera and take pictures with Santa and tell him what you want for the holidays.  We have attached his letter below. We will not be providing free pictures with Santa this year because the printer was too slow and some pictures came out blurry.  Instead, people can bring their own cameras and take pictures with jolly St. Nick, which will speed up the process and make sure Santa can hear all your holiday requests!

Letter from Santa:

Greetings all!

Rudolph has confirmed that the sleigh is nearly packed.  He can hardly wait to lead the reindeer with my sleigh full of toys on our long trip to visit the homes of good children.  The elves are busy putting bows and ribbons on the last of the presents.

But in all of the shuffle, I lost my list of what the kids in the Superior community wanted for the holidays!  I'll have to meet with them so they can all tell me what they wanted, and who is naughty and nice.  Can I come to Winterfest this year and ask the children what they want?  The reindeer and I are planning to arrive in Superior at about 5:00 on December 6th.  I hope to see a lot of nice kids there.

I have to go.  Mrs. Claus is calling me for dinner.  Happy holidays to all!

Sincerely,

Santa Claus

Little Blue Bookshelves

This year we are asking for new or gently used children's books to donate for new Little Blue Bookshelves in Superior.  The Little Blue Bookshelf project places blue bookshelves stocked with gently-used or new books appropriate for children in the community where families with young children visit. Children are invited to take a book home to keep and share!

Books will be collected by members of the Junior League of Duluth for their bookshelf. Other Little Blue Bookshelves are being coordinated in Superior through the United Way of Superior-Douglas County and the Leadership Superior/Douglas County program.

Other Donations

In the spirit of helping those in need, the Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center (VNSC) will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items and new or gently used clothing and toys. The Center will be on hand at Winterfest to accept donations. All donations will benefit the Northwest Wisconsin Community Service Agency. The NWCSA is a private non-profit agency serving the Douglas and surrounding counties and is dedicated to better the lives of low-income and disadvantage residents. The programs administered by NWCSA include: Energy Assistance, Homeless Programs & Services, Food Pantries, TEFAP, WIC, Judicare, RSVP, Free Store, Emergency Assistance, Rental Rehab and others. Holiday Cookie Decorating

A fully decorated cookie To sprinkle or not to sprinkle; that is the question.  Come decorate a cookie at Winterfest with the Black Student Union!  This event is always a huge hit as you not only get to craft a cookie, you'll have a delicious treat, too!  Please limit one cookie per person and use sprinkles and frosting with consideration.  We want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to decorate a cookie and make their own Winterfest treat! Some volunteers having a good time decorating cookies

Kids Crafts

This year Winterfest will feature four different craft stations!

  • The Veterans and Nontraditional Student Center will be hosting a "Got Kids?" winter snowflake table where you can make your own paper snowflake.
  • There will be a Reindeer Family Picture Frame table.  Make your Reindeer family picture frame with help from the Student Health and Counseling Services staff.  Fun for the whole family.
  • The Resident Hall Association will be hosting a Sugarcube village.  Come back your own sugarcube structure and leave it in the village.  (If you want to take your structure home after the event, stop in before you leave.  Please don't carry this throughout the building as they can be messy).
