Announcing the Ninth Annual Liberal Arts Essay Scholarship Competition

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Provost's Office, Writing across the Curriculum Program, Writing across the Curriculum Advisory Group, and UW-Superior Foundation are pleased to announce this year's undergraduate essay competition. Eligible students are invited to submit essays to the competition.

Awards to Students: Up to three students may be selected as finalists in our local campus competition. The first-place finalist will receive a scholarship of $500 from the UW-Superior Foundation. All campus finalists will be recognized at the Writing across the Curriculum Showcase in the Spring. Finalists' essays will also be entered into a pool of essays to be judged at the UW-System level. Each UW System winner (two winners from UW comprehensive and doctoral institutions, and one winner from the UW Colleges) will receive a $2000 scholarship.

Recognition of Faculty-Staff Sponsors: Faculty and staff who have sponsored finalists will be recognized at the Writing across the Curriculum Showcase. (Please note that sponsorship is encouraged but not required.)

Eligibility: The competition is open to any UW-Superior undergraduate student in academic good standing who will graduate in Spring 2014 or later.

Application: Submit an original essay on the topic given below (1,000-1,250 words in length, typed using Microsoft Word, double-spaced, 12-point font). A title page must be included with the following information: title of essay, student's name, major, institution, college and home address, e-mail address, telephone number, name of faculty or staff sponsor (if any), and the following statement: "I hereby affirm that this is an original essay and my own work." Submissions must be made by email to Dr. Deborah Schlacks, Coordinator of Writing across the Curriculum, at dschlack@uwsuper.edu; all essays must be attached as Microsoft Word documents.

This Year's Topic:

In his essay "Only Connect," William Cronon outlines ten qualities that distinguish a liberally educated person. Describe a moment from your recent education when you have been most vividly aware of the importance of one of these qualities.

You may find the Cronon essay here: http://www.williamcronon.net/writing/Cronon_Only_Connect.pdf

Strong student essays will invite reader engagement through description and reflection on personal experience, as well as demonstrate careful consideration of the Cronon essay. To learn more about the goals of a liberal education, you may wish to check the liberal education learning outcomes at http://www.aacu.org/leap/vision.cfm.

Winning essays from recent years can also be viewed on the contest website: http://liberaleducation.uwsa.edu/scholarship/.

Help is available through the UW-Superior Writing Center with revising and honing this paper. Go to www.uwsuper.edu/writingcenter for information about the Center's services.

Judging: Essays submitted by UW-Superior students will be evaluated by a committee of faculty and staff from the UW-Superior Writing across the Curriculum Advisory Group. The campus scholarship will be awarded only if a submitted essay is of sufficient quality to be sent on as a campus finalist in the UW System-wide competition. Final selection of winning essays at the System level will be determined by a group of judges from the UW System Advisory Group on the Liberal Arts (SAGLA). System winners will be notified in late Spring 2014.

UW-Superior Deadline for Essay Submission: Friday, December 20, 2013, 11:59 pm
