Enter the Liberal Arts Essay Competition

UW-Superior students are encouraged to submit their entries for the Liberal Arts Essay Competition. Entries due Feb. 1.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Provost's Office, Writing across the Curriculum Program, Writing across the Curriculum Advisory Group, and UW-Superior Foundation are pleased to announce this year's undergraduate essay competition.  Eligible students are invited to submit essays to the competition.

Awards:  Up to three students may be selected as finalists in our local campus competition.  Each of the campus finalists will receive a UW-Superior Foundation Scholarship of $500 (first-place finalist), $300 (second-place finalist), or $200 (third-place finalist).  Finalists' essays will then be entered into a pool of essays to be judged at the UW-System level.  Each UW System winner (two winners from UW comprehensive and doctoral institutions, and one winner from the UW Colleges) will receive a $2000 scholarship.  

Eligibility: The competition is open to any UW-Superior undergraduate student in academic good standing who has completed a minimum of 30 credit hours by the end of the Fall Semester 2010.

Application: Submit an original essay on the topic given below (1000-1250 words in length, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, and typewritten using Microsoft Word).  A title page must be included with the following information: title of essay, student's name, major, institution, college and home address, e-mail address, telephone number, and the following statement: "I hereby affirm that this is an original essay and my own work."

Essay Topic:
Liberal education can be a means to personal fulfillment as well as a pathway to a functioning democracy. Perhaps less evident: a liberal education is also highly practical. In an economy in which most people will change jobs a number of times over their lifetime, the person with a solid liberal education is often the most employable. The basic learning outcomes that are the bedrock of liberal education are all essential tools in the 21st -century workplace. Reflect on your own work experience; or interview someone else about his or her work experience. How have the habits of mind and the skills of a liberal education been relevant or advantageous to the challenges posed by the workplace?

 Write an essay that makes a convincing case for the practical economic value of liberal education by creating a narrative about a specific workplace. Be sure to carefully illustrate the connections between success at work and a strong liberal education.

Submission: Submissions must be made electronically by campus email to Dr. Deborah Schlacks, Coordinator of Writing across the Curriculum, at dschlack@uwsuper.edu; all essays must be attached as Microsoft Word documents.

Judging: Essays submitted by UW-Superior students will be evaluated by a committee of faculty and staff from the UW-Superior Writing across the Curriculum Advisory Group.  The UWS Foundation Scholarships will be awarded only if the submitted essays are of sufficient quality to be sent on as campus finalists in the UW System-wide competition.  Final selection of winning essays at the System level will be determined by a group of judges from the UW System Advisory Group on the Liberal Arts (SAGLA).  System winners will be notified in Spring 2011.
