Juliana Polson Named Winner of the 2013-14 UW-Superior Liberal Arts Essay Competition

Juliana Polson, an accounting and finance major from Superior, has won first place in the 2013-14 UW-Superior Liberal Arts Essay Competition. Her essay is entitled "The Inspiration of Diverse Communication."This document requires Acrobat Reader to open. Her sponsors are Beth Grbavcich and Heather McGrew of the Writing and Library Science Department. For placing first, she has been awarded a $500 UW-Superior Foundation scholarship.

The second-place winner in the UW-Superior competition is Kaylie Knase of Lake Nebagamon for her essay entitled "Ask Away: My Journey in Learning to Question." This document requires Acrobat Reader to open. Her sponsor is Allen Shepard of the Writing and Library Science Department. The third-place winner is Kelci Greenwood, a history major from Eau Claire whose essay is called "An Outsider Listening In."This document requires Acrobat Reader to open.

At the Writing across the Curriculum Showcase, to be held in the Yellowjacket Union on Friday, April 25, these students, along with their sponsors, will be honored for these achievements.

In addition, the three essays have been sent forward to the UW-System Liberal Arts Essay Competition. Two essays by students at the four-year campuses in the System and one essay by a student at a two-year campus will be selected as winners in the System competition. Each winner at that level will receive a $2000 scholarship.

Entrants in this year's competition were asked to write their essays on this topic: "In his essay 'Only Connect,' William Cronon outlines ten qualities that distinguish a liberally educated person. Describe a moment from your recent education when you have been most vividly aware of the importance of one of these qualities." The UW-Superior Liberal Arts Essay Competition is sponsored by the Provost's Office, the Writing across the Curriculum Program, the Writing across the Curriculum Advisory Group, and the UW-Superior Foundation. The System contest is sponsored by the UW-System Advisory Group on the Liberal Arts.
