Writing Across the Curriculum events and services

Posted on Sep 9, 2010
Learn about writing, get help with your writing or meet other writers through events and services sponsored by Writing Across The Curriculum.

 For faculty and teaching staff:

CETL Book Club:

Writing Across The Curriculum Coordinator Deborah Schlacks will facilitate a discussion on John C. Bean's book Engaging Ideas: The Professor's Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom.

This book is a great nuts-and-bolts guide on this topic. The book club will meet on the following Tuesdays: October 12, October 19, and October 26, from 4:00 - 6:00 pm, in Yellowjacket Room 202.  Reserve your place (membership is limited to 12) by contacting Emily Levings at CETL (cetl@uwsuper.edu) no later than September 15, 2010.  Each book club participant will receive a complimentary copy of the book.

Cross-Disciplinary Brown Bags:

This fall will see the continuation of the popular WAC Brown Bag series begun last spring.  Topics for this fall will include rubrics and how UW-Superior student workers use writing in their campus jobs.  Watch your e-mail for more information!  (And send your ideas for additional brown bag topics to dschlack@uwsuper.edu .)

Instructor Consultancy Service:

Want to enhance the way student writing is used in a single class, a series of classes, an entire curriculum?  The WAC Coordinator will consult with you on optimal ways to include student writing in order to help students achieve learning goals.  Contact Deborah Schlacks at dschlack@uwsuper.edu to arrange for a consultation or to get more information about this service.

For students:

Writing Center Consultations

The Writing Center (Sundquist 119) offers free one-on-one peer consultations, both in-person and online, for all students concerning writing they are doing in any and all classes, no matter the discipline.  Beginning September 7, the Center is open from 9-5 Mondays, 10-5 Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-9 Wednesdays, and  9-4 Fridays.  (On Wednesdays from 5-9, we're at our satellite location, JDH 133.)  To arrange for a classroom visit by a staff member to inform your students of Writing Center services, contact Yvonne Rutford at yrutford@uwsuper.edu .

Two Essay Contests Gear Up This Fall:

Encourage your students to enter the Liberal Arts Essay Contest and/or the Women and Gender Studies Essay Contest.  (Both are co-sponsored by the WAC Program.)  The deadlines are not until spring, but students can begin working on their entries this fall.  Cash prizes await the winners of both contests.  And for the Liberal Arts Essay Contests, up to three entries can be chosen to represent UW-Superior in the System-wide contest.  (A UW-Superior student won at the System level in 2009!)  Watch for details.

Writers' Conference:

Lake Superior Writers and the WAC Program are co-sponsoring this conference for aspiring and practicing creative writers.  It takes place on Saturday, September 18, 9-5:30, in the Yellowjacket Union.  There will be workshops, impromptu writing sessions, peer feedback sessions on work in progress, and an open reading.  The cost is $10 for LSW members with advance registration, $15 for nonmembers with advance registration, and $20 for all on the day of the conference-and students get in free with their IDs!   For more information, contact Yvonne Rutford at yrutford@uwsuper.edu.

National Day on Writing:

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 is the second annual National Day on Writing.  Our campus will celebrate with a noon open mic in the Yellowjacket Union.  Read an original piece of writing, or just come listen.  Contact Deborah Schlacks at dschlack@uwsuper.edu with questions.

Writing Center Holiday Open House:

Each year in early December, the Writing Center opens its doors to everyone on campus for refreshments and conversation.  See what the writing center has to offer; enjoy talking with your colleagues and students!  Watch for details about the date and time of this year's event.
