The Writing across the Curriculum Program is offering a brownbag session on Wednesday, April 7, at noon, in YU 202, entitled "Promoting Academic Integrity in Student Writing." This session will take a comprehensive approach to questions surrounding academic integrity. What can we instructors expect students to know already about the use of sources and about documentation when they enter our classes? How can we construct writing assignments that encourage a response that is the student's own? Does an honor code offer a way to promote honest practice? What is the difference between intentional and unintentional plagiarism, and in what ways can instances of the latter be seen as "teachable moments"? What role could or should Turnitin play (or not play) in our responses? What about cases of plagiarism that demand an appropriate--and legal--response from an instructor? Two colleagues will join me in the presentation: Tammy Fanning, Assistant Dean of Students, will talk about what the appropriate responses are from a legal standpoint. And Yvonne Rutford, Senior Lecturer of English and a longtime instructor of English 102 (soon to be renamed Writing 102), will talk about what is taught in 102 regarding plagiarism and the importance of academic honesty.
