UW-Superior's Commitment to Our Liberal Arts Mission and Tradition

Since its founding in 1893, the University of Wisconsin-Superior has remained deeply committed to achieving its liberal arts mission:

"The University of Wisconsin-Superior fosters intellectual growth and career preparation within a liberal arts tradition that emphasizes individual attention, embodies respect for diverse cultures and multiple voices, and engages the community and region."

As an acclaimed University of Wisconsin campus proud of its successful liberal arts heritage, UW-Superior provides our diverse students with countless opportunities for engaged and applied learning that empowers and prepares them to deal with life’s complexity, diversity, and change at the personal, interpersonal, local, and global levels.

We encourage our students to develop a clear sense of personal and social responsibility, as well as strong and transferable intellectual and practical skills, including effective communication, critical thinking, analytical reasoning, creative problem-solving, collaborative teamwork, and the demonstrated ability to apply knowledge and skills in real-world settings.

Our goal is not to prepare our students for a single job. Our goal is to equip our diverse students and graduates with the essential, transferable knowledge and applied skills that will best prepare them for successful and rewarding lives and careers in an ever-changing global society.

To achieve this mission and vision, we are committed to offering our students dynamic courses and high-impact learning experiences that focus on gaining a comprehensive knowledge of the world and its diverse cultures as well as in-depth applied studies in specific areas of each individual's academic and career interests.

Key to Success: Embedded High Impact Teaching and Learning Practices

UW-Superior faculty and staff integrate the use of "High Impact Practices" (HIPs) in teaching and learning across our core courses, University Studies program, and major/minor curriculums in order achieve our mission of fostering intellectual growth and career preparation within a liberal arts tradition.

Our Connections to the Liberal Arts Tradition

UW-Superior has infused the vision and values of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) "Liberal Arts and America's Promise" (LEAP) Challenge into our comprehensive undergraduate curriculum. Our distinguished faculty and staff are recognized leaders in the scholarship of teaching and learning and regularly present at regional and national AAC&U conferences. UW-Superior is an active founding member of the University of Wisconsin LEAP Initiative.

UW-Superior is also the only university in Wisconsin to be a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), a group of more than 30 prestigious public colleges and universities across the nation. The Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges is championing the cause of liberal arts education of superior quality in the public sector, as they recognize the importance of liberal arts and sciences education for success in a complex global society. COPLAC institutions like UW-Superior provide students from all backgrounds access to outstanding, affordable, well-rounded liberal arts educations.
