Academic Service Learning (AS-L)

Academic Service-Learning is a credit bearing, educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility. The AS-L initiative aims to make UW-Superior a regional leader in academic service learning, thus providing a distinctively public quality to UW-Superior's liberal arts mission.


  • Searched for and hired AmeriCorp VISTA volunteer to initiate AS-L programming


  • Creation of AS-L Advisory Group and development of priorities and budget


  • Search for and hired AS-L Coordinator, July 1, 2009
  • Establishment of the Center for Academic Service-Learning
  • Incentives provided for faculty to integrate AS-L pedagogy into course curriculum


  • Assisted faculty from 14 different disciplines to integrate AS-L pedagogy into 26 courses
  • Placed 447 students into community-based learning experiences in 30 different local and national partner sites
  • Collaboratively organized and implemented first annual regional AS-L conference April 15 and 16
