Second degree students are occurring more frequently at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Why? UW-Superior gives students the opportunity to explore their options all while offering affordable tuition. Zachery Abukhodair decided his first degree wasn’t right for him, so he came back to the welcoming campus community to follow his love for working with kids.
“After eight years working in an after school program, I finally realized that I wanted to teach and help kids learn,” said Zachery. “I’ve always had fun working there, so the decision to become a teacher just made sense.”
“UW-Superior is an amazing place to go because of the instructors,” he said. “They’re like a breath of fresh air, and they remind you that life on this campus is what college should be like.”
While Zachery is connected to teaching and the Twin Ports area, he believes that one of the main reasons he stuck with UW-Superior was because of his instructors.
“The instructors make the Teacher Education program what it is,” said Zachery. “They just want you to succeed. I feel so supported here, and that feeling is really great.”
There was also another motivator for Zachery returning. The superior value that is placed on making education available to everyone.
“I love the Teacher Education program as a whole because of everything it gives you,” Zachery explained. “As a student, you get an amazing education at a significantly lower cost. You can’t beat it.”
Zachery’s main takeaway from the Teacher Education program is the experience he gets out of it.
“The field experience has allowed me to go out and teach a 7th grade history class,” said Zachery. “I was also given numerous opportunities to teach at elementary grade levels – that’s a huge advantage that UW-Superior provides.”
Zachery also plans on getting a Coaching licensure. After graduating he’s looking into finding a teaching job in Colorado, as he’s always pictured himself there.
