A composer must take individual notes and arrange them into a beautiful melody. The process of organizing the complexities of the UW-Superior Music department is a similarly daunting task, yet one that is just as rewarding when done correctly.
For the past two years, Andrea Yezek an Academic Department Associate in the Music Department, has assembled the pieces to keep the concerts running smoothly. Yezek organizes nearly 30 concerts each year – each of which require their own promotions, advertising, programs and managing of student employees. These performances range from high school festivals to the University Recital Series, Jazz Band and choir concerts. She also schedules all the courses for the department.
If keeping on top of all those responsibilities sounds overwhelming, Yezek can look back at her time as a student for helping with her organization skills.
“I was a double major in Communicaition and Legal Studies,” Yezek said. “I also completed my Paralegal Certificate and Human Resources Generalist Certificate through the Center for Continuing Education during my four years at UW-Superior. It was rewarding to put my experience from being a student employee and taking what I have learned in the classroom and putting that into action.”
As a student, Yezek began working at the front desk in the Yellowjacket Union. The enjoyment she got from meeting new people and her coworkers on campus made it difficult to leave. Soon after graduation, Yezek was hired for her current position at UW-Superior.
Her dedication to the Music Department has already been noticed. Yezek’s marketing promotions for last year’s Valentine’s Day Jazz Band Swing Dance saw a quadruple increase in ticket sales.
“Working at UW-Superior was an easy choice for me,” she says. “I love the faculty and staff I work with, but the students are what keep me coming back day after day. I love being that helping hand to students like so many staff members were for me.”
