UW-Superior is unique in that it has affordable tuition for students in Wisconsin, Minnesota, out of state students and even for students abroad. Xiaosi Zhai decided to come to this UW System university because of the lower cost.
“My sister came to study at UW-Madison, but tuition here at UW-Superior is much more affordable,” Xiaosi said. “I’m not leaving because people here are so nice, and I love my small classes.”
The small classes allowed Xiaosi to have a relationship with her instructors that she never knew was possible.
“Back in China, in college, students would prefer to keep quiet and just listen to the instructor in class,” she said. “Here students are more willing to interact with the instructor in the class, and I’m learning so much more.”
Learning more has allowed Xiaosi to give back to the community by becoming a Math tutor.
“Being a Math tutor has allowed me to help them, and they have helped me with my English,” she said. “Helping others makes me feel so good, and I feel needed here.”
Xiaosi has made a home and community for herself by being more involved in her Math major and becoming a Resident Assistant on campus as well.
“Being an RA, I’m more social now,” she said. “I like to learn about others, and it’s great that I’m getting better at my English and learning more about the American culture and people from around the world.”
Along with being a part of Residence Life, Xiaosi is a part of the World Student Association and is very active in international student life.
“I reach out to as many people as I can to get different advice and make new friends. I’m not as shy as I used to be, and I like to make excuses to talk to people,” she said “Getting to know about other cultures is so cool. The diversity here is amazing.”
Xiaosi is determined to get her master’s degree in Math after graduating. She’d like to stay in the United States to start her career as well.
