Senior Year Experience
All Biology majors complete a Senior Year Experience as the culmination of their biology education. Working in conjunction with a faculty sponsor, students select and complete one of the three options below. Students are required to publicly present the results of their work, typically during the Department's Research Symposium near the end of each semester.
Internships are supervised outside-of-school experiences students complete with approved employers in biological fields. In recent years, our students have received internships with an impressive array of regional agencies, including Duluth Aquarium, University of Minnesota, US Environmental Protection Agency, St. Luke's Hospital, Wisconsin DNR, and the Lake Superior Research Institute to name a few.
Participation in an internship requires registration for BIOL 496 in cooperation with a faculty member.
Biology majors at UWS have a long history of carrying out excellent undergraduate research in collaboration with faculty or regional research sponsors. Completing a research project for a Senior Year Experience is especially recommended for students intending to further their education in graduate school.
Participation in undergraduate research for the Senior Year Experience requires registration for BIOL 491 in cooperation with a faculty member or research sponsor.
In Seminar, students use scientific literature review, reading, and discussion to delve deeply into an aspect of biology that suits their interest. Students work closely with a faculty member throughout the process.
Participation in Seminar requires student registration in BIOL 492 in cooperation with a faculty member.
