Richie Somanathan

My friends are like family here. I’d tell any international student that was coming to UW-Superior for the first time to be excited and not be afraid.

A beautiful campus, a quiet environment to study, an inviting place, somewhere with all four seasons and a great education were all things Richie Somanathan looked for in a college, and all these reasons are why he chose to Be Superior.

“Being from a very large city in Sri Lanka, I wanted to go somewhere that I could peacefully focus on my classes and where I could enjoy the outdoors,” Richie said. “I’d never seen snow before, and I really wanted to experience the seasons!”

Richie got his chance to enjoy snow faster than he expected and fondly remembers his first snowfall.

“Every one of my international friends and myself turned into kids – we were throwing snowballs at each other and playing in the snow,” he said. “I love winter. I’ve started skiing, ice skating and snowboarding.”

Growing up in a city where people are always busy, Richie loves the friendly atmosphere UW-Superior provides.

“I couldn’t believe how nice people are here. Everyone is accepting and welcoming. I’ve never been in a connected place like this,” he said. “I love the International program. They’re always helpful, and they never stopped doing their job after I got here.”

Leaving his culture behind was the hardest thing for Richie, but he’s immersed himself in the campus culture and made many friends.

“My friends are like family here. I’d tell any international student that was coming to UW-Superior for the first time to be excited and not be afraid,” he said. “You’ll get all the help you need, and all the students are great people.”

Being open to new things has also helped Richie to discover new experiences in the classroom.

“The Biology program has the greatest instructors ever. They’re so fun to be around and talk to,” he said. “Right now I’m doing research with Dr. Lorena Rios Mendoza, and it’s something great to be a part of. I get to see more of the world this way.”

Richie’s goal is to work and save money for medical school after graduation. He wants to do even more research in the medical field and ultimately become a surgeon to help others.
