Cheong Soon Gan researches the intersection of media, ethnicity, diasporas, nation building, and identity (both personal and group) in post-colonial Malaysia. At UW-Superior, he teaches a broad range of Asian history courses, including Women, Colonialism, and Nationalism in Modern Southeast Asia; Modern India; Re-interrogating the War: A History of 20th Century Vietnam; Pre-Modern East Asia; and Empire in Modern Asia. In the pipeline are courses on Modern China; Samurai: A History of Modern Japan; Asian Diasporas; Islam in Southeast Asia; and History of Food, Identity and Nationalism in Asia.

Currently, he is continuing his research on the impact of propaganda on the everyday lives of Malaysians in the 1960s, as well as embarking on a study of food as an inter-ethnic cultural glue in heterogeneous societies. He is also interested in the presence of Asia in Superior (and the Twin Ports in general) and Southeast Asian-Americans.

Dr. Gan received his Ph.D. and M.A. in History from the University of California, Berkeley and a B.A. (2nd Upper) in English Literature from the University of Malaya. He was previously are porter and editor in Singapore with The Straits Times and its sister papers.
