Deborah Schlacks is Professor of English and Chair of the Writing and Library Science Department. She also serves the campus as Writing Center Director. A native of Texas, she received a BA in psychology in 1978 from Baylor University, an MA in English in 1982 from Texas Woman's University, and a Ph.D in English with a Concentration in Rhetoric from TWU in 1986. She taught at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas for 10 years before coming to UW-Superior in 1996.

Her past publications include American Dream Visions: Chaucer's Surprising Influence on F. Scott Fitzgerald (Peter Lang, 1994). Her chapter on the influence of his hometown, St. Paul, on Fitzgerald appeared in the 2013 book F. Scott Fitzgerald in Context, published by Cambridge University Press. She regularly teaches such courses as first-year writing, Introduction to Rhetoric, and a course crosslisted with Women's and Gender Studies entitled Writing Women, Women Writing.

A resident of the Lake Amnicon area, she enjoys reading; writing; watching old movies; and being in vocal and handbell choirs. Most of all, she enjoys spending time with her husband Eric, daughters Beth and Laura and son-in-law Tim; and pets Scout and Delilah.
