Using the self-designed major, I was able to take my previous credits in history, political science, and communication and combine them into a complete degree, which I named political communication.

Why did you choose the self-designed major?

As someone who was in and out of multiple schools and majors, I had many semesters worth of credits built up and nothing to show for it. Using the self-designed major, I was able to take my previous credits in history, political science, and communication and combine them into a complete degree, which I named political communication.

What support did you receive from our advisors and/or instructors in planning your major?

I worked with Christina Kline almost entirely through the process and I must say that I feel eternally grateful to her for and all she has done for me. I didn't even know that the self-designed major was a possibility for finishing my schooling. After meeting with her, I not only felt confident in my decision to pursue this degree, but I had the proper guidance on how to go about completing it. Christina was very receptive and helpful in getting my political communication bachelor’s degree approved by the parties necessary.

Overall, what was your experience like at UWS?

My experience at UWS has been a rollercoaster, but that is purely based on my personal life and experience with mental illness as a young adult. I can say with absolute certainty that I was given ample support from the staff and faculty at UWS both personally and professionally during the hard times I faced. Looking forward, I absolutely would recommend UWS, especially for a nontraditional student like myself.

How have you used your degree?

I am still in the process of finishing my degree, but I can say that having this degree provides me the opportunity for advancement in my current occupation. It is clear already how useful my classes have been in my current occupation and I expect my skill levels in the human resources area will noticeably improve.  The number one reason I decided to return to school and finish my degree was to enrich my life personally and to have a sense of personal accomplishment.

What are your future career goals?

I plan to continue working as a human resources manager for Covenant Ability Network of Minnesota for the foreseeable future. I am very happy working in a nonprofit setting, especially for an organization that changes peoples’ lives for the better. I hope to continue growing my skills and experience and perhaps move into a higher-level position in the future.
