Gary is a native of Duluth, Minn., where he attended Denfeld High School. Before coming to UW-Superior, Gary spent a year at UM-Duluth. After coming to Superior, Gary was selected as alternate captain in 1966-1967, the same year he was named to the intercollegiate hockey all conference team.
After graduating, Gary became head coach of the UW-Superior hockey team in 1977. He was invited to the NAIA tournament six out of nine seasons, where he won the consolation championship in 1980 and finished as runner-up in 1981. During his tenure, 11 of his players were selected as All-Americans.
Prior to becoming head coach at UW-Superior he was head coach of the Superior senior high school hockey team. He won three state championships, three runners-up and one consolation championship.
Gary was the area scout for the Los Angeles Kings for nine years, and last year he served as area scout for the Ottawa Senators, both of the National Hockey League.
Currently Gary is serving the city of Burnsville, Minn., where he is employed as the director of recreation and enterprises. Before that he was the recreation and facility manager in Burnsville.
Gary was the NAIA Coach of the Year in 1978-79 and 1979-1980 while at UW-Superior.
