Induction Year: 1998
Sue Squires Bauer attended UW-Superior from 1968 to 1972 and participated in field hockey, volleyball, basketball and track. Off the field, she took part in a high school recruitment tour group, spent two years as a resident assistant and one year as assistant head resident in the campus residence halls.
After graduating from UW-Superior, Ms. Bauer devoted herself to raising her children, teaching and coaching young people in athletics. As a physical education teacher in Sultan, Wash., she coached volleyball, basketball and track. While staying home to raise two children, she coached basketball and girls soccer. All this time, she maintained her own skills by playing various levels of softball and A-level women's soccer.
Today, Ms. Bauer is the seventh-grade physical education teacher and volleyball coach at Centennial Middle School in Snohomish, Wash. She is pleased with the progress of women's athletics over the past three decades. "To see the opportunities our daughter has that were not available for me is exciting beyond belief. Thank you Dr. Binger, Ms. Hedricks and others for fighting the constant battles that allowed us to be … athletes."
