Percussion Ensemble and Opera Scenes

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2019, 7:30 - 9 PM

Location: Thorpe Langley Auditorium

Join the UW-Superior Music Department for a special event featuring both the Percussion Ensemble and Opera Scenes performances.

Percussion Ensemble will feature works with African, Japanese and Irish influences, as well as music by minimalist composer Steve Reich, performed on a variety of instruments.

“This concert will feature a full stage of percussion instruments,” said Brett Jones, UW-Superior professor of percussion and world music, and Music Department chair. “Everything from marimbas, vibraphones, chimes, crotales, timpani, djembes, woodblocks, gongs and a Japanese temple bell built especially for this concert from a 100-pound propane tank.”

UWS music majors Ben Pettit, Johnny Erickson and Matt Niemi will be featured soloing on the vibraphone. The Duluth Superior Symphony Youth Orchestra Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Jones, will also perform.

Opera Scenes will feature students performing staged scenes from grand opera including “Carmen” by Bizet, “Falstaff” by Verdi, “La Boheme” by Puccini and “Street Scene” by Kurt Weill.

“Audience members will get a taste of some of the comedic moments in each of these operas,” said Vicki Fingalson, professor of voice and director of opera workshop at UW-Superior. “Opera Workshop is a wonderful way for students who love singing and acting to explore and develop their overall performance skills.”
