Alternative Spring Break offers a variety of options to take advantage of the week free from classes. This year there are a number of Alternative Spring Break trips planned though Campus Life. As they have done for the past 15 years, UWS will be sending a delegation out on spring break to support Habitat for Humanity. The group this year will be working with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver to participate in a home build to support families who might not have been able to afford a home otherwise.
Alternative Spring Break (ASB) gives students the opportunity to have a spring break that is meaningful and memorable for years to come. It is an alternative to the 'traditional' spring breaks that whisk students to tropical locations for a week of fun in the sun. Not all ASB trips will focus on service and volunteering, for example there are a few other trips planned including a Fishing Trip to Bull Shoals Lake in Northern Arkansas, complete with a trip to the factory of Ranger boats in Flippin, Arkansas.
The Superior Outdoor Adventure Program(SOAP) is also offering some trips to cater to the adventure enthusiast, including Rock Climbing in the Red River Gorge and Canoeing on the Buffalo National River in Arkansas. Both trips are beginner to intermediate level and will focus on getting outside and taking in the beautiful scenery that surrounds them.
ASB provides students with the opportunity to get away for a much needed break for an affordable price. However, the best part of ASB, is the learning that takes place while on a trip, most of which students will not fully realize until later. Take some time to talk to students and find out what they are doing for spring break, you might find that it really is no break at all, but rather more work and a chance for them to give back.
Watch for the Campus Life Spotlight each Tuesday online and in the Staff Digest.
