The Library at the University of Wisconsin-Superior serves as a gateway to the world of information and knowledge. Through information literacy, the Library becomes an active participant in the teaching and scholarly activities of UW-Superior supporting and encouraging learning and the development of life-span critical thinking skills. The Library provides a nurturing environment where the UW-Superior community can pursue individual educational and career goals within the liberal arts tradition.

Jim Dan Hill Library provides instruction and information resources to support learning, teaching, and scholarly activity at UW-Superior. The library offers personal and classroom instruction in the access, use and evaluation of information. The library has a technology-enhanced classroom, featuring a SMART board, for library instruction. Electronic resources, subject guides, and information learning guides are available via the library's website at http://www.uwsuper.edu/library. Reference service to assist in answering information needs is available in person, by telephone, and by e-mail, and chat. Consult the library's website for service hours. In-depth consultation with librarians is provided by appointment.

The library has a growing collection of books, periodicals, government documents, and videos including electronic formats. In addition, the library provides online databases, most with full text, which can be accessed from on or off campus. The library participates in many cooperative agreements locally, regionally, nationally and internationally that make it easy to share resources and information. Through this network the library is able to borrow material not available at UW-Superior.

The Library is a student-friendly space with flexible, comfortable seating, two fireplaces, and lots of natural light. Many study rooms are available. Each includes a video/DVD player, TV monitor and a network connection or wireless access for use with computer notebooks for the preparation and practicing of class presentations and homework. The Garden Level is a quiet study floor.

The campus wireless network is accessible throughout the Library. Notebook computers are available for check out and use in the Library.

Special Collections Top of Page

Jim Dan Hill Library has several unique and special collections. It is a selective depository library in the Federal Depository Library Program and for State of Wisconsin documents. The majority of federal and state documents in the library pertain to areas that are part of the curriculum and issues affecting the 7th Congressional District of Wisconsin. The Library has extensive legal resources. The Special Collections area includes the Lake Superior Maritime Collection, University Archives, the State Area Research Center, and the Beecroft Collection. The Lake Superior Maritime Collection is a research collection of high quality. It identifies, collects, preserves, and provides access to materials that tell the story of maritime history and activities relating to communities surrounding Lake Superior and the upper Great Lakes. The Jim Dan Hill Library is a Cooperating Collection of the Foundation Center. As a Foundation Center partner, the Library provides free public access to grant maker directories, print resources on fundraising and nonprofit management, and access to grant making databases.
