Adaptive Education/Supplemental Teaching Minor Top of Page

This minor prepares students with the professional knowledge, understanding, and skills necessary to work successfully with students who have special education needs within a variety of settings including both in and out of the general education classroom. This minor is open to any student, regardless of their major.

When taken as a minor in conjunction with an Education Certification major, or as an add-on to an existing WI DPI teaching license, this minor leads to Adaptive Education Supplemental Teaching certification at the MC-EA, EA-A, EC-A levels. 

A Criminal Background Check and negative TB Test (Mantoux) are required of all students to complete the required field experiences. The required forms can be found online at

Required courses (21 credits required):

The Exceptional Child -- 3.00 credits
Characteristics of Exceptionalities -- 3.00 credits
Inclusive Management Strategies -- 3.00 credits
Family and Culture -- 3.00 credits
Methods of Adaptive Instruction -- 3.00 credits
Practicum in Special Education -- 3.00 credits

An elective from ART, COMM, FNS, HHP, or PSYC at the 300 level or above, chosen in consultation with the program coordinator. -- 3 credits

Special Education Minor Without Certification Top of Page

This minor prepares students to be highly qualified inclusion teachers but it is not a licensable minor at the undergraduate level. This minor also provides students the opportunity to take courses in the field of special education at the undergraduate level to find out whether it is an area in which they might want to gain certification later.
