Liberal arts universities meet to consider mission, message
Liberal arts colleges need to tell their story in a way that connects with all who need to hear it.
A number of events concluded this past week. My visit to the AAC&U national conference, the annual meeting of liberal education-oriented universities, meant catching up with our COPLAC (Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges) colleagues. I received a number of compliments from Bill Spellman on the work he has conducted with several of our campus faculty members concerning liberal arts and COPLAC initiatives. There is much national dialogue on how we should connect and tell our liberal arts message in a way that resonates with the varied constituents with whom we deal.
The open campus forum on emergency-response planning and safety took place in Erlenbach Auditorium at noon on Thursday. In case you missed the forum, I encourage you to view this Active Shooter safety video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VcSwejU2D0 which was shown at the forum and can be found also on the campus safety web site. It was produced by the City of Houston, TX (Ready Houston) with funding from the U. S. Department of Homeland Security.
IMPORTANT: Emergency response drills will be conducted on campus during the week of Feb. 11. These will not be full emergency scenarios; rather, you will be asked to stop and consider your response given your location when the drill is called. Notifications and more details will be forthcoming from Campus Safety. Please ensure that your students and colleagues are aware. There will be a debriefing forum in Erlenbach at noon on Friday, February 22 to discuss concerns and observations which have arisen as a result of the drills.
In case you have been out of the loop, the women's basketball team celebrated another heart-stopping win! Avenging an earlier loss to Oshkosh, the 'Jackets came from behind and pressed hard in the second half. They brought down the house! Good luck as they conclude a winning season with road trips in the next couple of weeks.
