Academic background:

Eleni Pinnow is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin–Superior. She received her BA in Psychology from St. Olaf College and a masters and PhD from Binghamton University in Cognitive Psychology. Her primary basic research interests include spoken word recognition. Her current interests in the scholarship of teaching and learning relate to issues surrounding the science of Psychology, academic service-learning, and reducing stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide. Eleni teaches a wide range of courses ranging from General Psychology to Senior Research to Biological Psychology.

Research interests:

Dr. Pinnow studies how people process and recognize spoken language. She is particularly interested in how people are able to recognize variant forms of words (for example, how do we know that the word broccoli can also be pronounced as brocc'li, or gentle as gen'le). Elini is also interested in how experience with language (and culture) shapes usage of language.

Non-academic interests:

Dr. Pinnow enjoys hiking, cross-country-skiing, quilting, spending time with her dogs, and traveling. She is active in the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI)-Douglas County, WI. She also has an impressive (and unexpectedly large) collection of Tartan Noir.
