In her free time Heidi enjoys being active outside with her husband, two daughters, and dog Neo. She dreams of traveling and exploring new places. She loves good coffee, green tea, kale, yoga, dark chocolate, farmers markets, acupuncture, thrifting, road tripping, herbal medicine, Scandinavian crime series, decluttering, cheeseburgers, rock hunting, deep breaths, cross country skiing, and the oxford comma. 

Professional Background

Heidi Schaefer received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 2004. As an undergraduate, she worked as a student assistant at LSRI with Dr. Mary Balcer on zebra mussel research. After graduating from UWS Heidi became a staff member at LSRI in 2005. Soon after Heidi began learning zooplankton taxonomy and has been peering through the microscope ever since.  

Research Interests

Heidi Schafer is LSRI's lead zooplankton taxonomist and has expertise in Great Lakes zooplankton taxa. Heidi has a recent interest in the detailed taxonomy of harpacticoid copepods and their distribution in the Great Lakes. She is also interested in invasive species ecology and ballast water management. In 2018, Heidi was appointed as LSRI's Quality Assurance Manager.
