Professional Background

Ian Deterling teaches Music Technology and World Music at UW-Superior. Deterling is a composer, arranger, orchestrator, and classic horror film enthusiast. His works are self-published under Deterling Music (ASCAP), and have been performed by members of the London Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, the San Antonio Symphony, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Regensburg (Germany), the São Paulo State Symphony (Brazil), and the Woolmer Philharmonic Orchestra (United Kingdom). The most recent high-profile performance of any of his works was the performance of his Duet in F Minor for Violin and Bass Trombone at Brazil's 9th Annual International Music Festival in the city of Pelotas. Deterling's Masters thesis, Mystery of the Wax Museum: An Original Film Score for Orchestra and an Analysis Outlining the Evolution of Film Music Through American Horror Films of the Early 1930s, illustrates the transitional period between silent films and fully-scored sound films.
