About Me

Jodie loves gardening, reading, visiting markets and being outdoors. A lifelong passion for travelling has seen her visit 12 different countries and 28 states within the United States of America. She particularly loves going on long drives (10 hours+) and so road trips are always on the agenda when time is available.

Professional Background

Dr. Jodie Riek received both her Ph.D. and M.S. from Oklahoma State University and her undergraduate degree from Queensland University of Technology in Australia. She believes learning should be actively engaging and therefore designs learning experiences that are active, participatory and fun. Dr. Riek is passionate about improving teacher pedagogy by shifting the focus away from standardized academics back to developmentally appropriate practices, which develop the uniqueness of each child. In particular, her dissertation research examined how teachers in early elementary classes were using play pedagogies to deliver the standardized curriculum.

Research Interests

With over two decades of experience in a wide range of contexts within the field of early childhood education, Dr. Riek has developed an invested interest in the use of play pedagogies to promote personally meaningful and engaged learning experiences for learners. This interest has seen her research focus on the use of play pedagogies in early elementary classrooms to deliver standardized curriculum; education policy and advocacy in relation to play; how mentoring relationships impact teachers use of play pedagogies; and, the socio-emotional outcomes of play pedagogies.
