Professional Background

Steven M. Baule is an assistant professor in the Educational Leadership Program at UW-Superior. He was one of 120 superintendents invited to the White House in November 2014 for the White House Summit on Making American Schools #Future Ready. He was presented the Van Miller Distinguished Practitioner Scholar Award by IASA and University of Illinois in 2013. He was named of the Top Ten Technology Savvy Superintendents in 2010 by eSchool News. Baule served for 13 years as a superintendent in Illinois and Indiana. Dr. Baule has presented on technology-related topics to a wide range of educators and librarians in the United States, Canada, England, and Australia. Dr. Baule served as an adjunct faculty member in educational administration, instructional technology, and library and information science programs at a number of Midwestern universities. He has published on educational, library science, technology, and historical topics.

Research Interests

Dr. Baule's research interests include information literacy, the impact of digital curricula, the leadership necessary to impact the effective use of instructional technologies in schools, facilities design to enhance the effectiveness of technology, online professional development models and strategic planning particularly in how it relates to digital curriculum, technology and information literacy. Primarily, his research agenda focuses on strategic planning and technology implementation efforts in PK-12 schools from the dual perspectives of approach and impact. Recent research been on the impact of 1:1 and BYOD programs. Research around the policy development necessary to support instructional technology programs and the relationship to the status and scope of those programs is a related area.

2002 - Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) - Educational leadership and Policy Studies - Loyola University Chicago - Dissertation/thesis topic: One hundred years of school library and educational technology development: A case study of the New Trier Township High School District.

1997 - Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) - Instructional Technology - Northern Illinois University - Dissertation/thesis topic: The technology planning process and the role of the school library media specialist.
