Re: Council Chair Report

The following is the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Council Report to the April 21, 2009 Faculty Senate Meeting. Supporting documents have been provided.

  1. Approved Council Minutes
  2. Items Requiring Senate Action
    • Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Coordinator: The hiring proposal passed with amendments to request an internal search before general advertisement of the position, and to require representation from the English department on the search committee. (attachment)
    • Senior Experience for Individually Designed Majors in World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures: UAAC approved this proposal with a recommendation to provide funding to WLLC in the same amount as to the departments housing majors with approved senior experiences. (attachment)
    • Final Examination Cancellation Policy (attachment)
    • Cell Phone Policy: The university-wide ban on classroom use of cell phones and similar devices, with exceptions to be allowed by permission of the instructor, passed with two opposing votes. Proponents cited increasing frequency of disruptive use of such devices, and the advisability of having a university-wide policy to take the onus off of individual instructors on this issue; opponents said that the new policy would simply add to an already overlong list of university policies and would likely be ignored. 3. Informational Item
    • UAAC will meet for regular business on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 2:30pm in RSC 218. This meeting was not on the original calendar. The primary order of business will be to consider the draft Academic Plan, and, with any remaining time, other items of both old and new business will be considered.
