Building and Facility Access

Below is information related to campus building and facilities for fall 2020. If you have any questions, please contact us and someone from the Fall 2020 Planning Team will be in touch with you.

Building Hours and Access

Campus buildings will be open 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. Yellowjacket Union and Marcovich Wellness Center have separate hours - please refer to those sections for more information.

Effective November 26 through January 10, Old Main and Erlanson Hall buildings will be closed in an effort to save on utility costs. These buildings will be locked and closed to the public. Staff are still allowed to work in the buildings if necessary, and can contact campus safety for access. For information on how to connect with offices housed in Old Main (Financial Aid, Registrar, Cashier), please visit the Student Services page.

The Jim Dan Hill Library building will be closed to the public November 26 - January 11, reopening on January 12. However, all library materials and services are available online, through curbside pick up or delivery via snail mail. Visit the library website to request materials, get help with research or to request instructional support.

Yellowjacket Union

The YU will continue to provide inclusive services and spaces that support the university mission and our students.

Yellowjacket Union Services

Due to COVID-19, we will no longer allow use of the e-mail/public computer kiosk, use of board games, and certain spaces where we cannot encourage social distancing.  

These services will be available:

‘Jacket Book & Supply

Students will have direct access to the store to purchase books, course supplies, and Yellowjacket merchandise. In-person and online purchasing will be available. Students will be able to utilize their student accounts to purchase textbooks and school supplies beginning July 2. Unfortunately, merchandise cannot be placed on student accounts.

To order course materials and merchandise, place your order online and then choose to either have it shipped directly to you or picked up at store.

If purchasing in person, students will be directed to go to the textbook counter with a copy of their class schedule. Bookstore staff will review the class schedule and locate all required items for that class. Bookstore staff will also be happy to also get any supplies or general merchandise you need. Upon receipt of course materials, students may proceed to the checkout counter to complete the transaction.

Express checkout will also be available for students who order books, supplies and merchandise online and elect to pick up in the store.

The facility will be open to all currently enrolled students and faculty/staff. Community memberships are not available at this time. 

Reservations are required to use the weight and cardio rooms to aid in social distancing and ensure time for cleaning and disinfecting. 

  • For reservations, visit
    • In the upper right hand corner click “Log In.”
    • Log in with your UW-Superior username and password.
    • When you log in, you will be asked to accept a “Liability Waiver.” You will only be asked to accept this waiver once per year (If you do not accept, you will not be able to sign in to the facility).
    • Click on the weight and cardio room reservations icon in the middle of the page.
    • Pick the day of the week and which room you are reserving – this will bring you to the availability on that day and show how many spots are open for each time.
    • Pick the time that you want to reserve and Click “Register.”
    • Click “Register” by your name.
    • Please review the COVID 19 protocol information on this page and click “Add to Cart.”
    • You will now see the dates/times you reserved. You can register up to 72 hours in advance. Click “Check Out” (There is not a fee for this but we do have to go through this process)
    • Click “Check Out” again
    • You will now see your payment was successful and receive an email confirmation.

You can cancel reservations by clicking the "Cancel" icon on the front page. When you click on it, you will be brought to a list of the reservations you have made. Click the three dots next to the one you wish to cancel and click “cancel reservation”

You are able to reserve times up to three days in advance. You can cancel up to 2 hours in advance. If you will not be able to make your reserved time, please be sure to cancel so other people can get in a reservation. 

Be sure to always check in at the front desk when you arrive in the MWC.

Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse, Joan Hedrick Swimming Pool

Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse 

  • Sign up will be required for all users to access the Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse walking track
  • To support capacity controls and access monitoring, users will sign up for a reserved spot with a maximum of 60 minutes per space in the above areas.  
  • The climbing wall will be closed fall semester.

Joan Hedrick Swimming Pool

The Joan Hedrick Swimming Pool will be closed fall semester. 

Weight and cardio rooms, lockers/locker rooms

  • Sign up will be required for all users to access the weight and cardio rooms.

Lockers/locker rooms

No lockers will be available for use or rental during the fall semester.  

Classrooms, computer and printer access

Classrooms will be limited to occupancy requirements and will remain in a static set up for the semester. Classrooms and meeting rooms are only available for scheduled classes, meetings and activities only—no drop-in use will be available. 

There will be limited computer and printer access at lobby computer stations. 

Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium

The Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium will only be available for in-season athletic practices and organized/reserved home games. 

Campus Recreation and programs

The Department of Campus Recreation will continue to offer recreational, fitness and wellness activities for students and the campus community. 

Virtual programs will be offered in fitness/wellness, Superior Adventures - Outdoor Recreation and intramurals sports during the semester. 

Equipment checkout

The MWC Desk will no longer check out equipment such as basketballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, racquetballs, goggles, jump ropes, tennis equipment, elasti-bands, etc. 

Safety Measures

  • Face coverings (such as masks or face shields as an accommodation) are required at UW-Superior in all indoor public spaces (with limited exceptions) and strongly encouraged outside when physical distancing is not possible.
  • Please expect an increase in check in stations and requirements.  
  • Signage around the facility will encourage proper physical distancing, capacity limits and closed areas. 
  • Enhanced and strict cleaning protocols will be utilized.
  • Student employees and custodial staff will be cleaning and sanitizing throughout the day, including all high-touch points, limited seating spaces, computer stations, and all door handles.
  • Facility users will be required to clean and sanitize any workout equipment that they use
  • Each space will have occupancy capacities that will be posted and strictly enforced
  • Posters, signage, stanchions, directional floor arrows and communications will direct traffic flow and help communication to users. 


Wessman Arena

Wessman Arena will not be open to the public or available for rentals until further notice. More information can be found on the Wessman Arena website. 


Starting Monday, November 23, the mailroom will be suspending most campus deliveries. Mail can be picked up Monday - Friday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the University Services Building. Mail will be delivered to the Post Office at 12:30pm daily.

If special arrangements for deliveries are needed, and have not already been arranged, please contact the mailroom.

Catering Services

At this time, Chartwells will only be providing contactless catering which means:

  • All meals are preordered and individually portioned into disposable containers
  • Buffets will not be available
  • All beverages will be provided in bottles, or portioned into cups with lids
  • Disposable dinnerware and wrapped cutlery offered

Chartwells continues to monitor guidance provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and other health authorities. They are taking several steps to ensure a safe foodservice environment and reinforce our stringent health and hygiene standards.

Remote Computer Lab Access

Remote lab access is available, which allows users to log onto a computer that is physically located in one of our computer labs. Remote lab access gives students access to Windows, Office 365 and processor-intensive programs like the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite or ARC GIS Pro. Remote lab access is especially beneficial to students that run Chromebooks or other less powerful devices.

Study Spaces

Since the Jim Dan Hill Library building is closed, socially distanced study spaces have been arranged in the Yellowjacket Union. Additionally, some classrooms in open buildings will be available for use if safety protocols, such as mask wearing, spraying down surfaces with disinfectant and social distancing, are maintained. Please note that only unlocked rooms are available for use, and that these spaces are only open during building hours.
