Paige Wojysiak

I not only learned more about my community, but I also about myself

“I not only learned more about my community, but I also about myself,” said Paige Wojysiak. “I believe I’ve become a more conscientious informed citizen.”

Through her Academic Service-Learning (AS-L) experience, Paige learned about her future career. Paige is a senior, double majoring in community health and exercise science at the UW-Superior. While taking her Health and Human Performance Internship course, she had the opportunity to complete an AS-L internship with the City of Superior’s health and wellness programs. Paige interacted with a variety of city employees from the Superior Fire Department, Superior Public Library, Superior Landfill, and Superior Public Works. She made presentations on back care and how to lift properly. She also participated in a health fair and flu shot clinic.

Paige was the third health and wellness AS-L intern with the City of Superior. Every project she was involved in was new, so she had the opportunity to complete a lot of the foundational work. The goal was to create and establish programs for future students and interns to implement, and she considers her success in this regard to be one of her greatest achievements.

Paige advises future students to realize that, “Twelve weeks fly by so make sure to manage your time well. Be bold, involved, and participate even when you don’t quite understand what’s going on around you. Value the opportunities you are presented in college because it’s a safe time for trial and error. Learn from your mistakes so you are more prepared when you get out into the workforce.”

Her experience was eye opening for her personally and professionally. Paige said she became a better person and contributed to creating a better community through her AS-L experience.
