UW-Superior Alumna: Johanna Kirk

Johanna Kirk, Class of '01, recently was named one of the Wisconsin Law Journal's "Up and Coming Lawyers of 2010."

The honor recognizes young attorneys throughout the state who are doing exceptional work. Kirk was chosen in part because of her successful appellate work and her volunteer service to the state and local bar associations.

"I was shocked," she said of her nomination. "I still, to this day, don't know who nominated me. I see it as recognition of the hard work I've already done."

Practices in Superior

Kirk practices law with Knudson, Torvinen, Jones & Kirk, S.C. in Superior. She was hired there in 2006 after graduating from the Hamline School of Law in St. Paul and passing the state bar exam. In January 2010 she was named a partner in the firm. She spends much of her time working with the Superior school district and local businesses.

Majored in legal studies

Kirk majored in legal studies at UW-Superior, and she praised the program and the university.

"My time at UWS taught me to be a very critical thinker," Kirk said. "The problem-solving skills and ability to look at things from different angles are definitely beneficial to practicing law."

She hopes to continue serving the community.

"Something about this town has just got me," Kirk said. "I've come back here after moving away and plan to stay here as long as I can."
