On June 26, 2014 the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Committee on Infractions released a report focused on the University of Wisconsin-Superior and concluded that major violations occurred within the athletics department. The report states that UW-Superior considered athletics criteria in the awarding of foundation scholarships over a five-year period, from 2008-2009 through 2012-2013. NCAA rules prohibit Division III schools from considering athletics when determining a student's financial aid.
In addition, a secondary violation was committed when a foundation scholarship was set aside for a former men's hockey student-athlete from 2007-2008 through 2011-2012. Funds for the scholarship were never awarded and once the violation was discovered, the scholarship criteria were amended.
"As soon as we discovered that violations occurred with regard to our foundation scholarships, we self-reported to the NCAA and began the process to make changes," Athletics Director Steve Nelson said. "We immediately corrected the language on the scholarship applications and over the last two years we have been proactive in working with the NCAA to ensure that we would not find ourselves in the position of violating NCAA rules in the future."
Following the review the NCAA Committee on Infractions accepted the parties' agreed upon violations and the institution's proposed penalties and corrective action.
The UW-Superior athletics department will be on probation for two years, from June 26, 2014 through June 25, 2016. UW-Superior will also be required to undergo a review of its financial aid process during each year of probation and have selected campus representatives attend the NCAA Regional Rules Seminar in each of the next three years.
The penalties do not include any prohibition from post-season competition and do not require any UW-Superior sports teams to vacate past victories or championships. The penalties also do not reflect any incorrect action by any specific coaches, student-athletes, or teams within the UW-Superior athletics department.
UW-Superior has created a web site to serve as an information repository regarding the case. The page can be found at www.uwsyellowjackets.com/sports/2014/6/25/GEN_0625142223.aspx.
